Hey all,
I watched a film a while ago and can't remember the name of it, I seem to recall at the beginning you see a girl and her Dad is some sort of researcher, when she grows up she has a similar job. The film goes on and there is some sort of portal built, there is a large ball that drops through a hoop with the woman in it and she see's her Dad, only it's an alien or something. In reality the ball looks like it takes seconds to drop through the hoop, but when the analyse the tape they found she was in there for a fair few hours...
What's the film called?
Ben

I'd say it's Contact, starring Jodie Foster, dramatised from the book by Carl Sagan.

I haven't read the book, but if the film is based on it then it is probably worth reading. Otherwise if a book is a complete rewrite of a film then forget it.

If you had said "Jodie Foster has an encounter with a 1980's executive desk toy" then I'd agree - it's Contact. A pretty good film.

It's a pretty intelligent film - good story, minimal effects.

I enjoyed it. The film is kind of an abridged version. Given it's Sagan there's a lot of scientific detail and background in there that they didn't have time to go into for the film, plus the book has a kind of epilogue. It also goes into more detail on the relationship between.. can't remember the names, but the characters played by Foster and Matthew McConaughey. It's essentially the film with everything in more detail. If you like serious, thoughtful, 'near future' sci fi it's one of the better ones IMO.

I'd hope the book is better. I thought the film was a really painfully bad telling of a potentially good story, despite Foster being a highly rated actress and me really feeling her frustration at the ending.
Brat; I imagine it was an old war film. My favourite one with Japs in had a few old soldiers on one of the remote islands who refused to believe the war was over because their Emperor would definitely never surrender. They were still fighting decades after. I think it was a true story.

I wasn't overly keen on the film... very slow, and too predictable for my liking. I'm sure the Japanese soldiers was a true story as well... weren't they hiding in the jungles of Borneo? Or did I dream that/make it up?
