Quote:
Geography is another contentious area. Are those in an area of high unemployment more deserving of welfare help than those who in more prosperous areas?

Anyone living in a areas of high unemployment really cannot be described as undeserving. If they all moved to the south east then house prices might increase

Quote:
Conservative blogger Mr Montgomerie wants his party to be bolder. "The more the Conservative party expresses its views on welfare and taxing the wealthy in moral terms the more successful it will be," he says.

And that mention of the wealthy raises an intriguing final thought, which might make tax evaders and big bonus bankers uneasy. If we are now more prepared to talk about the "undeserving poor", who are the "undeserving rich"?

Unless they tax the rich they will just be seen as a welfare support group just for the rich. It seems unjust that they happily will give bailout/welfare for banks but not to the poor. Some of the welfare reforms are necessary, such as a simpler benefits system that means that it is easier to see how much better off you are. Though the marginal tax rate of 65% on the poor is excessive especially when even the very rich only pay 50% marginal rate. Make that fairer and it will be much better.

Nothing warms the Conservative heart more than kicking a poor person - preferably into the gutter - on the way to the club.
