What is it? I can't get onto the site from work.

I get that it's a social network but what makes it different from Farcebook?

The fact that it's not Farcebook. The developers claim it will be more open and easier to maintain your privacy, for one thing.

Well it's open source for one, they are releasing the source code for free (IIRC if you are so minded you can download it now from their SVN)

I was looking at their wish list but unfortunately there wasn't a huge amount I could do, I did email them to offer my services to help but haven't heard back from them and that was a month or so ago

It's yet another social networking site, but one that is very hot on privacy. At the moment it seems quite buggy, but then again it is in Alpha at the moment...
