Is there a law that states reasonable living conditions that a landlord has to comply to? Especially temperature. At the moment our house is freezing. The heating has been on all day and the lounge feels warm compared to the rest of the house... it is 14degrees in the lounge. At the moment I'm so cold that I'm beginning to lose the feeling in my fingers as I'm typing. There must be some law that states that this has to be sorted. |

Is it heating using fires or central heating? If it's central heating, see if bleeding the radiators helps. |

It's central heating but the radiators have been bled and didn't need it anyway. The radiators are working fine, when the heating is on they are so hot that it isn't possible to touch them. The problem is that the house is falling apart and every room has some sort of draft. |

Student houses round here are shocking, but most of them have certificates to say they conform to regulations... We don't have central heating, just really expensive electric heaters (eaten up £40 this week), but the house has single glazed sash windows, making for poor insulation + drafts... |

If you have concerns, it's worth checking with either the CAB or your local environmental health department (former would probably be more helpful). |

As far as I am awaire there is no legal insulation etc rules. You might be able to do them if it was excessivly damp etc but poor insulation unlikely |

I'd echo that. The CAB are there to advise you, and they're usually helpful - although my experience is limited and from 3 governments ago. One of my mates just moved house this weekend. My poor old bones are still recovering from a night spent sleeping on the coldest floor in the whole of England! He has a single gas fire in the living room and a 50 year old gas cooker. The rest of the house has storage heaters - expect there's no off-peak supply to them because it's never been fitted. It's an old house with single glazing, bad heating and dangerous electrics. The only thing "new" about it is the lick of paint covering up the mould  It does have a lovely garden though - and it's probably warmer than the bedroom

Sounds like our 2nd year house. I slept in a hat for the 2 months over christmas. |

My mate Lampshade slept in a dinosaur play suit. It had a hood. Curled up in the sleeping bag, it totally looked like we had a giant newt staying over

I think the amount of heat lost through the head has often been overexaggerated. However, wearing a hat is a good idea. When I was living alone two years ago, the bedroom radiator was warm but never really hot. Consequently, the room remained cold. I would sleep in thermal 2-piece long johns, thick tracksuit bottoms, a t-shirt, a beanie hat, a hoodie (with the hood up), and for the first time in my life, socks. I'd also have a couple of blankets over the duvet. Megatoasty and I would hate having to go to the toilet in the morning. |
