Resident TV Geeks Go Go Go!

We all know what the classic TV series were: Red Dwarf, Doctor Who, The Wire, Father Ted etc.

But what is your personal favourite single episode of any series? Of all time. It could be the icing on the cake of a classic series, or it could be an episode which promised so much potential for the series, but which stands out as a diamond in the rough in an otherwise poor show.

Also, if you were to champion your favourite television series, and try to convert a naysayer, what episode would you use as a justification for your fanaticism?

I feel this is different enough from general TV discussion to warrant a little threadypoo :)

Oooh right now the clubbing episode of Spaced elbows it's way to the front of my mind.

I don't know if it's my favourite episode of everything ever, but one I keep going back and watching is "Grapes of Wrath" from the first series of Black Books.

Hmm... The first one that springs to mind is the final episode of BSG.

Mind blowing episode!

I'm sure I will think of others but for now this one will do.

I still think Galactica jumping into New Caprica's atomosphere in freefall, launching the Vipers, and then jumping away before it crashes is the best sci-fi military manouvre on screen. From Season 3 Episode 4.

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

That one is probably way up near the top of the list.

I'll have a punt at Firefly pilot episode "Serenity". Thinking about it, I could pick pretty much any one of them.

Stargate SG1, way back in series 3 or 4, when Jack is stuck in that groundhog day time loop.

Still on Season 2 here!

My favourite episode of a TV series is "Love's Labour Lost' from Season 1 of ER, in which Dr Green and his staff battle to save the life of a pregnant woman. I've never felt such tension from a TV show. In fact I did use this episode to get a few other people watching ER at the time and it worked.

It was aired over 4 years ago, sorry for any spoilage.

No problem, I wasn't being too serious. Really enjoying BSG and even in Season 2 I'm impressed that the Galactica is still in one piece.

I may have to watch bsg again some time. It really was an epic series.

I also loved the reference to caprica 6 in that other tv show (was it the wire?) with the guy who plays baltar.

As much as I am a geek, I'd probably have to say the 'Two Cathedrals' episode of The West Wing. The monologue Martin Sheen does alone in the National Cathedral is possibly the best single piece of television acting I've seen in years and pretty much everything else about that episode is perfect.

Interestingly enough, I would like to nominate an episode of ER.

Four of the characters had been sent to a session with a councillor, because of their attitudes. I can't remember who they all were, because it was so long ago. The councillor didn't turn up, so they spent the entire show chatting among themselves.

While this was so far removed from the usual ER action, I rate it as one of the best shows ever, because the fact that I enjoyed it so much proves just how much we, as the viewing public, loved the characters in the show at least as much as the action.
