Post subject:  T-Mobile's new 'Screw You' data tariff

Mobile phone companies tend to give their products memorable names. Orange has Dolphin, Canary and Racoon. Vodafone has its Connect Webpacks. And T-Mobile, of course, has its new Up Yours, Screw You and Na Na Na We're Not Listening plans.

There are three really galling things about T-Mobile's dramatic cuts to its fair use policy. The first is that it's such a big cut, with 3GB of monthly data (the allowance for some Android customers) dropping to just 500MB.

The second is that this cut is being applied retrospectively to people who've taken out long contracts.

And the third thing is the complete and utter balls T-Mobile is trotting out to justify it.

FYI, and there appears to be more info in the comments...

I read about this last night. The other problem is that you can't cancel your contract as T-mobile don't deem the internet usage as part of the contract but an add-on, or some other crap.

From the comments it would appear that this is only for new contracts and isn't actually being retrospectively added.

“On Monday 10 January 2011 we announced that, in line with the rest of the industry, T-Mobile would be reducing its Fair Use Policy for data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers. Following a further review of our policy, these changes will now be introduced from 1 February, to new and upgrading customers only - not existing customers.

There will be no change to the data packages for existing customers for the duration of their contract and we apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users."

Lysa Hardy, VP, T-Mobile UK

Information on new data policy:

From 1 February 2011 new and upgrading customers will be given a monthly 500MB data allowance. There will be no charge for those customers exceeding that limit, and those who do will still be able to access important services such as email and web browsing, however file downloading and streaming services will be restricted. Customers will then have the option to increase their monthly Fair Use Policy to 1GB a month by purchasing a Mobile Broadband Booster. This will ensure an improved quality of service for all of our mobile internet users.

Cheers LU, so they won't stop it, just slow it down.

I might cause a stir saying this but I agree with those limits. Especially if it means faster and more reliable connection for me by stopping others who are data hogs!
It is beyond why anybody needs more than 500mb for a phone. Can somebody explain?

500mb doesn't last long on data hungry phones, a few youtube videos on the way home, maybe download a game on your iphone and you could be at 100 to 200mb in one day. That doesn't include tethering, downloading podcasts, music, twitter, email or IM services.

I've never used more than 300MB in a month, but then most of the time I'm using WiFi rather than my data allowance.
I use 3g Watchdog (app) to automatically switch off the data if I ever reach my limit.

Presumably they'll all sell you a package for anything beyond that, so isn't that hovering around price-fixing amongst each other if so? :? :|

I know it is possible to use up but is that really necessary?
I can accept browsing, emails, IM and social networks on the go. But can't you wait to get home to watch those videos or download the game or a podcast over wifi? I think the common sense needs to be applied here.
Lowering the data allowance is much better than increasing the prices for all users...

Yeah like people will get a better deal ;)

My commute to/from work when driving is 90 minutes to 2 hours long

If I was to get the train I'd be looking at 2-3 hours, that is a long time each day to be doing not very much without wifi when just sat around

Either way all that happens with tmob is you get slowed down, other networks usually charge

I am not saying "Don't use your phone".
I am saying that using spotify over the cell network is ridiculous! Same for watching HD youtube videos. Or any videos pretty much. Not intensively anyway...

I can run my tap at home all day as i don't have a water meter. But I don't...

Most people don't use that much data...

On my iPhone, even though I browse and tweet a fair amount, downloaded a few apps and updates and have had at least 2 push e-mail accounts running for the last 15 months on the device, I have received 766MB and sent 261MB... So 500MB a month probably won't affect the vast majority of users...

That said, it is a bit unfair. Here, we have unlimited, in terms of cost, but T-Mobile slow the connection down to GPRS speeds after 5GB.

Why not have extra tariffs for higher usage? Then you could have a still higher tariff for unlimited use, and extra again for tethering.
