Post subject:  LED bulb question

I've just had the reverse light on the car blow - so I'm thinking of sticking in LEDs to replace the bulb.
While I've got the housing off, I thought I might as well do the others - but here's the thing:

Should I stick a red LED bulb in for the brake/side lights when the lens cover is already red, or would a white LED do just as well?
Would the red LED be bright enough behind the red lens?
The bulbs themselves have no colouring, of course, so I thought a white LED would be ok, but now I have doubt.

Any thoughts?

I reckon white would be ideal - unless there is a crack in the cover and you are going to fail the test on it without a red source.

Is there a price difference??

It makes more sense to use red, from a purely scientific perspective.

White LEDs work by having a Blue LED coated in a phosphorescent powder which converts the blue light into white, a bit like a fluorescent tube. The red filter on the brake cluster then blocks all the light that isn't red. The efficiency losses are high.

Red LEDs emit red light which goes through the red filter. Losses are low.

Of course, it totally depends on what you can actually buy!

A red LED would also mean that if you lost the cover you would still be legal as far as your brake lights.

Personally, I've had nothing but issues with LED replacements. So now I just stick with uprated fronts and boggo rears.

Bog standard, perhaps? Not sure.

Correct. It would appear my colloquialisms are not fairing too well of late.

I did too, but then I started questioning my intuition.

N00b.
I knew you were correct in your original assumption, Edd.

I like to upgrade the fronts (fully legal but some idiots still flash thinking I've got full beam on) but use 'boggo' bulbs on the back too.

It totally makes sense.

Do you set them low so they don't shine in other drivers faces? The problem I've seen is that people don't have their full beams on (you can see they switch as they come round the corner) but have the headlights angled way too high...
