It has dawned on me, in the kind of way that a falling chimney stack would dawn on you, that in mid-1991 I left a reasonably well paid job to go to further and then higher education. I have learned that the lecturer who I had the most contact with during my time at University is taking early retirement having reached the ripe old age of 60 a apuple if weeks ago. Twenty years.

I had a similar experience the other day. Although my 20 years ago was when I was 8.
I was reminiscing with a friend I lived down the road from when we were 8 years old and it suddenly dawned on me that that was 20 years ago.

I had one these the other day. Was looking for my passport and came across some paper with my handwriting. It was dated just over 20 years ago! The same day, my sister met the mother of one of my primary school friends. Given that my secondary school was on the other side of Brum and nobody else went, I never really bothered to keep in touch. Quite a surprise to find he still lives locally.

Twenty year ago I was enjoying my last year of middle school (Year 7 in today's money). I realy enjoyed first and middle school. The secondary school I went to was a [LIFTED] hole full of nobs.

That's just unfair! Twenty years ago Tesco Value was new, I would meet John Major at my school the following year, and there was a sense of recovery and optimism, post-Thatcherism. (Yeah, I was a nerd. Go figure.) Most of the friends I had, I lost touch with forever ago, but I seem to remember having a lot more fun in my free time! I can remember it all like it was yesterday, and nostalgia and fondness clouds it like a cheap perfume.

Twenty years ago I had just been made redundant, (for the first but certainly not the last time) and was living in telford, working for the countryside commision.
Twenty years ago Freddie Mercury died.
Twenty years ago my mum was diagnosed with the cancer which, a year later, took her life...
Twenty years ago my eldest step daughter was born.

20 years ago I would have been in primary school. I can still remember 6 or 7 names of people I was there with, which considering I've only seen one of them since I think it quite impressive. Quite a happy time for me all told, the innocence of youth and all.
