Mine's very dull, and you can only read it if you're signed up on the silly plaice. http://forum.yourwired.net/index.php?showtopic=843It's just a very long forum thread, mostly about what I ate for tea and how big my last pooh was.

I used the old Custom PC blogs for a while, but I only updated it infrequently. Since that site was destroyed by Dennis, I haven't done any blogging at all.

Would people mind explaining to me the reasons behind their decision to do it?
Also, hosting yourself/free site...

I like writing. I have opinions I like to share. I also like to share stuff I discover in my travels. Free site for me. I started on Blogger, as an experiment because some web design software I use had a plugin to let me create a template. I got fed up with the clumsiness, toyed with the idea of Wordpress (but I don't think I'm geeky enough to get it working properly), and ended up with Posterous. Posterous is fun. It's free, and you can literally post anything from anywhere and the server deals with it. For example, I can email to my account with pictures, text files, PDF, video, and it's all just sorted out. There's a bunch of collaborative stuff there, too, so if you want to set up a blog for a club or something where several people need to post to it, it's a doddle.

Considering forms of communication for when I leave. A blog seems like one possible alternative to the dreaded Facebook, if people want to see what I'm up to.

You could always create a Fb Page, though that won't help with your seeming phobia towards all things Fb related. The only reason I don't do much blogging is that I find it takes too much time to do it properly, and I'm spread thin enough as it is. Mine's not really a general blog anyway, it's specific to one of my interests. I suspect a general one would be better for me, but even then, I find anything I want to impart to a large number of people I'll put out on Twitter. *shrug* Mark

I tend to write about stuff that I want to express, but people here wouldn't really be bothered about. Either that, or if I've been hunting around for ages looking for a way to do X, but I can't find a way and I've just worked through and figured it out, I'll often write about what I've done so that other people can benefit. Most of my traffic is from larger forums which link to various articles to answer questions, or from Google searches. I started off using a free Wordpress account. When I bought my own hosting I decided to move my blog over. It's given me more flexibility, but I've not really done much with it.

The one linked to earlier is a free account, but if you host Wordpress yourself you can create complete sites (see my photo site for an example). Mark
