If you have ever dreamed of owning a flying car, then you may well be able to buy and fly one in the UK next year.

The Transition Roadable Aircraft, designed and manufactured by US company Terrafugia, is a road-worthy vehicle that has fold-out wings and is able to automatically convert into a fully-capable airplane in around 20 seconds.

Great, just like all the hassle of owning a car, but with all the extra hassle of having a pilots licence and all the airworthiness checks and registration...

But it has the potential to remove boy racers from the roads. In this, they only crash once, and as the crash would kill them, they wouldn't be on the roads again. The only downside is that they'd probably take someone else out with them.

That's cool!

I could cut the journey to work down to almost nothing by driving to Leeds bradford airport and then flying to ... err ... Leeds Bradford Airport and then driving to Harrogate from there...

Oh wait...

Would be cool if you were allowed to take off and land on the road.

Flying cars are cool but only with VTOL (and TOL access anywhere).

Not likely. Someone who thinks the height of cool is a blue light under their Vauxhall Corsa isn't going to be able to afford either the flying car or flying lessons, nor be smart enough to get a pilot's licence even if they could. Pilots' licence actually requires you to understand stuff and be able to do maths beyond your fingers.

The people who could buy these things are the people you see driving round in BMW M3's. So yes, still dickheads but a different set of dickheads.

Not all boy racers have licenses as is it. I bet some would steal it and give it a try anyway.

Imagine dozens of Al-qaeda suicide planes flying into a target or lots of targets. That might stop the idea.
