Samsung handset owners are being warned to stay away from an update to Windows Phone 7. Microsoft released a minor update to its mobile OS yesterday, intended to get the system ready for a larger update in March. While Microsoft admitted the update wasn't very exciting, it has caused trouble for owners of the Samsung Omnia 7 and Focus, with users reporting the update stalls mid-way through. Some users report the update stalls in the seventh stage of the installation, while others have said in online forums that their handset freezes when it tries to restart after the sixth stage. "Finally lost my patience and pulled the plug," said one forum poster. "Turned it on again and no problems, just no update installed." "Looks like I'll just unplug and restart it," said another. "I'm seriously disappointed by this, but hopefully Microsoft learns whatever it needs to learn from this." Not everyone blamed Microsoft, with one user noting other manufacturers aren't having the same problems: "Out of eight handsets, it's the two Samsungs causing a problem." A Microsoft spokesperson said: "We’re aware of this issue and are looking into these reports." However, support staff have warned Samsung users to hold off installing the update. "We would recommend at this time, not to retry the update, as subsequent attempts will fail similarly," a support moderator said on Microsoft's help forums. "While we continue to investigate the issue, we would ask that you not attempt the update until your device alerts you of another update opportunity, in approximately three days’ time." "At this point we would suggest unplugging and sit tight while we take a look at this issue," the Windows Phone support Twitter feed advised. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/365449/sams ... e-7-update FYI... |

Doesn't Big_D have an Omnia 7? I have to say this is a little surprising for Samsung's flagship handsets. I suppose they're still ironing the bugs out of the firmware for their WP7 handsets. |

I'd like to say I'm surprised, but the last Samsung handset I had nurtured a deep loathing of the company within me. I'd hope the top level stuff works like it should instead of some half assed attempt at a phone. |

I'm aware that Samsung's budget handsets are pretty dire, but I thought the flagship handsets were top-notch. I had the Omnia i900, which was a decent handset IMO, despite running the abortion that is Windows Mobile 6.1. AFAIK the "Omnia 2" was a decent handset too, and the Galaxy S is supposed to be a solid Android handset. |

Flawed Windows Phone 7 update affects 10% of users Microsoft has admitted that a small update to Windows Phone 7 caused problems for one in ten users. Earlier this week, Microsoft rolled out its first upgrade to the mobile OS, to prep the update system for a more important patch due next month. Once the minor update rolled out, users reported it wasn't installing properly, with a few saying it had bricked their handsets. Most of the problems seemed to centre on Samsung phones. While Microsoft at first said the issue affected only a small number of users, it has now said one in ten had trouble installing it. "Of the 10% who did experience a problem, nearly half failed for two basic reasons — a bad internet connection or insufficient computer storage space," said communications manager Michael Stroh in a post on the Windows Phone blog. "Luckily, both are easy to fix." Stroh admitted a separate problem was hitting "a small number of Saumsung phones", and confirmed that Microsoft has temporarily suspended updates to handsets made by that manufacturer. The update doesn't need to be installed immediately, but it will show up on all Windows Phone 7 handsets eventually. "Even if you skip this update, you’ll still eventually receive it," Stroh said. "The patch will simply be bundled together with our next update." Because of the complicated nature of the mobile market, it will likely take weeks for everyone to receive the update, he added. http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/365503/flaw ... 0-of-users |

As previously reported, the minor update literally "bricked" around 10-percent of the WP7 smartphones currently on the market, all of which were manufactured by Samsung.
