The new MacBook has a new connector.

They are calling it Thunderbolt.

So what are your thoughs? Hit of miss?

It could be the future of interconnects. One connector to rule them all…

Just wondering if there are any rivals out there that may sweep in and overtake it.

I'm not even sure I need USB 3.0, let alone Thunderbolt.

I can't complain about progress though, so long as they lock it down.

These are only the same as FireWire though, and there hasn't been any big hacks through that...
The article points out that Intel have added a way to limit memory access and although it says:

There are also no indications to show that it doesn't make use of it...

The thing I like about Thunderbolt is the potential to dispense with other types of connector.

Right now, I have a monitor connected to a monitor port, various peripherals connected to a couple of USB ports, and hard drives daisychained from a FireWire port. All those ports must cramp the style of PC hardware designers, so being able to provide one fast port for monitor, external drives and so on, will be a boon to them

As the Cat says, one connector to rule them all.

Since Intel came up with the idea, and they also came up with USB, apart from the FireWire bods tweaking things a notch further, I don't see any real competition. Yet.

Exactly.

USB was to replace serial, parallel, ps2 etc... Connections and create a single universal port.

However we are now back in the same position.

Ethernet, dvi, esata, USB, small display adapter, etc...

The idea of thunderbolt is to again create a universal connection to replace the current multitude of bespoke connection ports.

It''ll be a long time before it overtakes USB (if ever).Maybe if they bring out a faster optical version it will, but not yet.

USB was a replacement for serial ports and nothing more - FW, SATA, they were the replacements for parallel connections. USB wasn't a design for a unified port at all.
