Went shopping. Bought some ice-cream. Settled for Magnum Temptation Caramel and Almond. Come home. Open the celophane wrapper. Reveals three individual boxes, all gold foil, with a sticker 'lock' on it. Inside is the ice-cream, on a piece of coloured corrugated card.  I cannot believe how much packaging went into this, especially compared to their bog-standard range which is just a box with each ice cream in a standard wrapper. BTW, ice-cream was very lush. Tempted to have another!  _________________ He fights for the users.

It's terrible, computer manufactures and othr electronic goods makers are pouring money into making their products greener, all this company need do is USE LESS PAPER!

I'm always staggered at the size of box a single hard drive comes in from the manufacturer.
I appreciate there needs to be some impact protection, but c'mon...

Really? I get Samsung drives generally so cannot vouch for other manufacturers, but they all come with impressively minimal packaging, not much bigger than the drive itself.

Sent a drive back to Seagate under warranty - the boxes they like drives shipping in measure:
7" x 10.5" x 8.75"
If I could lay my hands on the digi camera, I'd post a pic of the amount of packaging they ship singles in.

Try Play.com for bare hard disks - black polythene and f**k-all else FTW!  Didn't even try 'em, and because postie didn't think it was anything that would break due to the wrapping, promptly posted it through my door... When I got Play to send me a 'returns email' I got an assurance the replacement would arrive in a box. Guess what happened? I have to praise Scan for generally being very good with packaging, cramming everything into the smallest box it is realistic to use. Also means everything is nice and snug and doesn't move too much. Also, smaller items tend to come in just some bubble rap and a bag, which also works well (bubble wrap means nothing will fit through the letter box either).

Ginger6 are my current packaging heroes.
I bought a new graphics card, something that is already excessively packaged. It arrived in a box that would easily accommodate my P182 case.

Warehouseexpress use plenty of packaging for lenses, but not too much. For other things they use suitably minimal amounts. Edd

Let us not forget that a good deal of the packaging these days is made from recycled materials, and can be recycled.
The Amazon packaging makes a big deal of it's green credentials. I am guessing the ice cream package in the OP was almost entirely paper and card (apart from the sticker).
