Are there any companies that you admire? (My admiration for a certain tech company is a matter of record.) If so is it on the list?

The List

Just why is Pepsi so far below Coke?

Well, I looked down the list and then up it again, and I didn't see Lego.

I recently decided to get a few spare parts for my sons' lego sets. One piece had been lost, three sets from ebay had pieces missing and although it's a long story, I needed a Star Wars Clone Pilot helmet.

Each set has a parts list and by visiting the site, you request the spares, set by set. Then they reply with a price and you place the order. The weird thing is, that they treat each item as a totally separate order.

Well, they dispatched four packages with spares in for absolutely nothing, but the fifth part, they chose to quote me £2.08 (inc P&P) for a part that costs 7p on the standard parts list. I want to pay as a gesture of good will for sending me the rest free of charge. This may have been their point of view as well.

To end the story here, how great is that? Six spare parts for four sets, sent out completely cost free. Excellent service. And as for the remaining part, well I am going to do an order direct from Lego UK this week, and will add the spare to the list. If they had chosen to quote me for the helmet, I wouldn't have the option.

With all due respect, that list is arse. There are plenty of companies doing great things in many fields that I do admire (take, say, Pagani in the automotive field for one) but none of them seem to be in that lot. It looks much more like someone's took a list of '100 biggest American corporations' and stuck a pin in it at random then added a few obvious big foreign ones. I mean, can anyone say they actually admire FedEx? Use, certainly. But admire? FedEx??

Not me. Had a bad dealing with them once and I'd think very carefully before sending time sensitive documents with them again. A simple sheet of A4 to Miami, ended up in the Caribbean somewhere, IIRC. Nearly cost someone (my boss) their green card application.

I haven't read the list, but my first (and only) thought was the John Lewis partnership.

The survey was commissioned by CNN so no surprises that it is a US company love fest  The survey was only asking Americans which explains it all really.

Exactly my opinion.

A curious list of American companies.

Admired by whom and for what?

I wouldn't trust the relability of any list like this that incluse Coca-Cola and McDonalds in the top 10.

Why would you admire a corporate entity? :?

+1 JL are are very impressive company, especially demonstrating that the employees don't need to be crushed in order to make a decent profit.

Looking at that list though, I'm guessing that rather a lot of the companies employees didn't get a vote on it. Coca Cola shouldn't be on there for a start.

For the 50 most admired companies overall, FORTUNE's survey asked businesspeople to vote for the companies that they admired most, from any industry.

I think that's the key to it :)
