So I need to get fit.

I'm pretty unfit at the moment, but not desperately overweight ( BMI 23.5 ).

Anyway, I'm going to start my RAF application in September/October. I'm at uni now, but want to go in after I've graduated and hoping to do a year work experience with them which means I need to go through the standard selections process. Obviously, I'm going to need to be in good physical shape, and to do it I'm trying to devise some sort of diet plan (to control the calories I consume) and obviously doing a load of exercise.

Anyone know of some good resources for this?

So far I've found the 100 press-ups/sit-ups program which looks useful, but not so much on diet so it would be good if anyone could link to some pointers on this? Obviously any pointers for the fitness side would be great too.

Cheers guys (and gals).

:)

This place is actually quite good daily tracking of nutrition and exercise (and is free). Won't tell you what to do, but will give you some idea if what you're doing is any use.

Hope you didn't take my comment personally. I don't even think it was derogatory tbh, so don't really know what the attitude is about?

Thanks for the link jobbwfc, will check that out!

Have you thought about maybe a martial art? It's not just the whole doing patterns and shouting, it involves quite a bit of fitness as well, give it a look.

I've got a BMI of about the same and decided to start getting fit a couple of weeks ago.

I don't really want to build muscle definition or anything but I would like to be able to do a short run without running out of breath.

I started by going for a walk (at a fast pace) and did about 3.5 miles in about 45 mins.

I did the walk a few times but wanted to start running to get my bpm up a bit so I bought a pair of Asics running shoes and started jogging.

A friend of mine's dad used to train her and she said he would take her on runs but not let her stop until the end so she would always do runs that she knew she would be able to finish.

Today I did 1.3 miles in 13 minutes without walking any of it. I did some stretches before and after and feel a lot better.

It sounds boring but stick an iPod on and it soon goes by. (It's also free)

Do you enjoy any kind of sport Manny? Of course there are a multitude of training regimes and diet-plans you could try, but the sad fact remains that unless these are of the crash variety (where you'll see results relatively quickly) you will probably tire of trying to self-motivate yourself to keep to them for any length of time... Sports however, especially team-based ones, are a great way to stimulate your enthusiasm for being active by combining the benefits of exercise AND the fun of playing a game.

I gave up on my weights a good few years back but still play football every Sunday - and sometimes midweek evenings when I'm called up to be a ringer winger - and not only does it keep me in pretty good health (despite the adverse effects of my other lifestyle choices) and moderately fit (I ran for about 3.5 hours in the gorgeous weather today - and we've been known to play even longer games) but its also great fun - whereas there is nothing more tedious than doing 100 crunches et al...

It's also worth noting there are a lot of differing opinions on how rewarding singular exercise programmes can be so if sport isn't the answer I would reccomend you at least speak with a professional of some magnitude (even if it's stealing an hour of a fitness instructor's time on a "fake" gym trial day).
