Wasn't sure if this should be news or general discussion.

Quote:
Formula 1 has been thrown into chaos after eight of its major teams said they are now planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season.
The threat by members of the F1 Teams Association (Fota) escalates their row with world motorsport boss Max Mosley over his budget cap proposals.
"The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 F1 Championship," said the teams.
"We've no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship."
Mosley was insistent on introducing a voluntary £40m budget cap for teams to curtail a "financial arms race" in F1.
But Fota refused to agree to his conditions, prompting championship leader Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso to take their drastic action.

Not sure if this is serious brinkmanship or if we will have a very strange season next year :?

I am curious to see how this progresses. It's been rumoured for quite a few years now that this was a possibility, but this is by far and away the furthest the idea has ever gone.

Good. It'll bring Bernie and Max down a peg or two.

The Italian grand Prix will be deserted without any ferrari fans!!
This is what happend when you get a twonk like max who believes hes all powerful and wants to introduce rules unilaterally without proper consultation and against the wishes of the majority of the teams.
I believe bernie will step in to protect his commercial rights. As lets face it it without those teams it isnt F1.

I dont think F1 has been boring the last two years. Especially qualifying this year.

It will be such a shame if it splits. RIP F1.

So who's going to start the Silverstone British GP thread then?

I agree with the FIA that they cannot yield to the wishes of a vocal minority, i.e. Ferrari; but this has gone beyond that, the majority of the teams are baulking at the magnitude of the restrictions for 2010. The FIA will have to at least try to compromise, this iron fist approach won't work.

Mind you, I wouldn't mind seeing Bernie brought down. Every time I see him being interviewed, I swear at the TV, he's such an arrogant, odious, little toad.

It's a shame that the sport could be on its last legs, it's only just gone back to the Beeb. I was getting used to no advertisment breaks again.

There is no guarantee that the Beeb will be able to cover the breakaway series, if it happens; especially if Bernie's FOM has a clause buried away in there. The remains of F1 will be poor fare, and unlikely to attract enough high calibre teams to sustain the sponsorship and coverage fees.

Worrying times indeed. :(

I think a new breakaway championship could be a good thing.

If the teams are dictating the rules then it could lead to a lot more flexibility in cars and potential better racing.

Yes, but will we get to see it?

I agree, it might also stop the people at the top making stupid decisions hopefully (are you listening, max & bernie?).

TBH it will probably be one of the biggest cost reductions in F1 (or whatever they decide to call the new championship), not having to pay people like Max's wages - I don't know what he earns but I'm betting it's alot.

This breakaway as far as I can see will only hurt 1 side - the FIA. I can't see them being able to have a rival championship against the big teams like Ferrari & Mclaren.

Max's position as head of the FIA is actually unpaid…
