I've been invited to a friends wedding this weekend (well actually to the reception).

The guy is a friend from school and I've maybe seen him 4 or 5 times in the past 10 years.

Normally I wouldn't question whether to go but the reception is in Durham which is about 1:45 drive away. I can't afford any accommodation and I'm struggling to afford the month as it is without spending £30 on petrol to get there.

Is it very bad to call/text to say that I'm sorry but can't go? I really would like to go but at the same time I really can't afford to.

It's not bad form at all.

In fact it would be a rare example of good form in that a guest hasn't just not turned up.

I'd just tell him that something had cropped up and you can't make it, but you'll visit as soon as you can.

You don't have to see someone every day or every week for them to be a good friend.

Just saying is all.

While that is very true, if they were a very good friend then Oli wouldn't be here debating if he should go or not.

It would depend on funds. Everyone is finding things tight and if he went a pressie would definitely be required.

If they were very good friends Oli would've been invited to the ceremony.
I'm guessing this is just a mate (or good mate at most).

In a similar position.
Girl that I've mentioned before just texted me with the date for her wedding to a guy I really don't like or trust.
So, in a combination of 'it should've been me' and 'i trust a politician more than him', I'm wondering what to do.
Do I smile politely?
Or do a 'graduate' during the ceremony?

Guess it depends on what direction you want to go in.

Either you go because you want to support her, be a friend etc. (you definitely don't want the "i'm a friend", "but you weren't even at my wedding" comment hanging over your head).

Or you just don't go and do the whole moving on/trying to forget about her route.
