As some may know, I have managed to get my 1990s Risc PC connected to the internet. The actual goal was to enable me to link it to one of the Macs here so I can do backups and move files around. It’s that or using a floppy disk (the older Archimedes will need floppy disk swapping). The magic is that I can use a web browser and see what sites look like. There are better browsers around, but it appears that I’d need an OS update for them to work - so no Firefox goodness for me right now. Instead, I have to use ArcWeb, which really does put things into perspective. Here is a page from x404 in all its glory. ![]() No CSS, no JavaScript. Just plain text and the odd graphic. How did we cope? It’s rather interesting to do this. I’ve got an FTP link to my MacMini, and using that I can put files form the RPC on any Mac I have using DropBox or MobileMe. I can also retrieve files by sending them to the Mini. I don’t think there is a RiscPC DropBox client. I would be very surprised if there was one. |

I think it was a website I visited that reminded me the way websites were designed in the late-90s. All very text-based and minimal graphics. Another website had a similar layout but animated GIFs for buttons - an object that rotated on its axis. |

Yes but when most people were on dial up it was necessary. Many sites now are obese in comparison. |

I agree it was necessary back then but a lot of these sites haven't been updated. They were more fan-based sites rather than anything else. Similar to geocities. |

I was thinking about this just the other day. No [LIFTED], no ads. ![]() |

Lol, impressive. TBH it looks like some websites do that haven't been prepped for IE9 ![]() (The GF uses IE9, not I BTW) |

Now got DropBox connectivity ![]() This is a fudge. I can FTP to the MacMini, and access that machine’s DropBox folder. Files then propagate to all the machines that access DropBox. This includes the iPad, which is my latest in a succession of ARM based machines. This FTP access should allow me to back up the hard drive of the RPC from time to time. |
