The Government has revealed it wants 90% of the UK to have superfast broadband by 2015.The Department for Culture, Media and Sport - which manages the UK's broadband - finally put a figure on the Government's target to give Britain the best broadband in Europe by 2015, saying "superfast" means a minimum of 25Mbits/sec download speeds.
The Government has previously refused to say just how fast superfast broadband is.
Culture Minister Jeremy Hunt also reiterated the Government's goal to have UK fully covered in connections of at least 2Mbit/sec by 2015, which was pushed back from 2012 at the end of last year.
He said no extra funds would be made available to reach the 90% target, instead saying the funding will come from an already promised £530 million. Hunt called for local authorities to create broadband plans and apply for access to those funds to deploy them.
"We have set aside the money and the expertise to make this happen," Hunt said. "Now local authorities need to step up to the plate by bringing forward their own plans, setting out how they will deliver this level of ambition."
The Government will announce the first round of successful funding applicants on 27 May.
Ofcom will next month start publishing an annual "league table" of broadband performance in local authority areas to track progress.
