Chinese prisoners forced to produce virtual gold, real profits for their guards

http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/chin ... profits-f/

Quote:
The virtual goods economy of massively multiplayer online games may be thriving, but it's also stimulating an undesirable side-effect: exploitation. A former detainee at a prison in Heilongjiang province, China, has told the Guardian about how he was habitually forced into playing MMOs like World of Warcraft for the collection of loot, which the prison guards would then resell online for as much as ¥6,000 ($924) per day. Such totals would be the product of up to 300 inmates working 12-hour daily shifts, though predictably they saw none of the profits themselves. The unnamed source was at a "re-education through labor" camp where the usual toil would involve actual, rather than virtual, mining. The profitability of the online market has seemingly inspired prison bosses to move with the times, however, with business being so brisk that the computers "were never turned off." A Chinese government edict from 2009 is supposed to have introduced a requirement that online currencies only be traded by licensed entities, but it's believed that the practice of using prisoners in this fashion continues unabated.

I'd rather do that than break rocks day in day out.

True but chances are you could be inside for any infraction you could end up with a money making skill when you come out.

If you ask me, WoW is the perfect deterrent.

I wouldn't like to forced to play that piece of sh!t for 12 hours a day.

I doubt that will happen anytime soon. I'd consider it a massive step forward if they stopped commiting infanticide.

I really ought to make the effort to find out what the fuss is about, as I have absolutely zero interest in the likes of Minecraft (my thoughts on WoW are pretty clear already) - I can't say I think it's crap, because I haven't played it - I just cannot generate enough enthusiasm about that style of game to bother to try it.

A little bit of chicken and egg going on there, methinks.

I used to play WoW.

I don't remember how I got into it, I think possibly a friend played it and I got curious. Then I got addicted (ish).

Then one day I just decided I didn't want to play it anymore and stopped. I went back to play it for a bit after an update came out, just to see what the fuss was all about, but then stopped again after a couple weeks.

At the time I didn't really have much to do (other than work) in the real world and couldn't really afford to go out so I suppose it was a cheap way of "socialising" with people. That combined with the addictive nature of the game lead to me playing a LOT. And it is addictive, the writers write it to make it that way and they know what they're doing. If you do get hooked in then it can suck up the majority of your time.

And I think it is definitely socialising. I wasn't into role playing and crap like that, most of the people I met online were fairly down to earth people and I met up with a few of them in the real world too.
