I like the Volvo 262C. Didn't even know it existed! The Ferrari 212 goes without saying. A common car not seen today (and one I had my first driving experiences in) is the MKII Cavalier.
My brother had a black SRi 130 saloon version too.

My mum owned the Skoda. It was powder blue, and had two paving slabs in the front luggage space to try and prevent the kangaroo impressions when it went over bumps. I nearly owned a baby-poo coloured Lada Riva estate as my first car, but as it singularly failed to demist any of the windows on my test drive I think I had a lucky escape. It was one of those test drives where you leave the garage forecourt, get to the end of the road, turn round and come back... The nearest to the Vauxhall Viceroy was probably a friend's Senator, though that was really a Carlton with pretensions. |

I used to go past a Reliant Rebel every day on the way to college in Crawley. Only ever saw the one... The Indy was a lovely car, although I always wanted the Bora. The 125 was a classic. I remember being driven around in one as a kid, in Milano. At a training course in Basingstoke, a fellow student had the Volvo 262C, American import. It went quite nicely. The Colt was a nice little car, there was one in the next street as I was growing up. It was so unusual, I actually wanted one, back then. That or the tricked out Mini 1275GT with blacked out windows, minilites, black paintjob and silver-reflector on white registration plates... The cop living next to my best friend had the Estelle. I remeber the VW Porchse 914 from Top Trumps. I also got to see one doing an Autotest at an Autojumble once. My dad nearly got the Skyline, but ended up having to downgrade from a Datsun 280C (now, that was a lovely Q car, straight 6 2.8L engine in a luxury body, it went like stink - and rusted quicker than a Yamaha parked in front of a chippy) to an Austin Maestro.   I got a ride in the Simca, they were fun. A friend had the Opel version of the Viceroy, it was a stinker. The Rekord was much better. I remember the Daf 55, thought it was ugly as hell, there was a similar looking Volvo, which was squarer and looked much better. *gasm The BMW M1 was my dream car growing up. I wanted either one of those or a Mercedes C111! I had models of both and I'd still give my left testicle for either (and given its current swollen state, I'd be glad to be rid of it, but that is another story!). The Renault 15 looks a lot better than the 12. Was it replaced by the Fuego? Saw the Ferrari at a track day. They are lovely. Same with the DB-1. My mum went out with an engineer who had worked at John Brown Engineering and still raced DB-4s, so we got to see a lot of classic DBs and other similiarly rare beasts on the race circuits. Although, the DB-1 was only a parade car, it wasn't raced! And the Mistral. A few I would have expected to see in that list, which either means there are more running around than I'd expect, or they are extinct. The Fiat 850 Coupé, that was a lovely car. I had a ride in one with an ex-rally driver, who had rallied it during the late 60s, early 70s. Sliding around the roads of Surrey at high speeds, between stone walls, it was an exhillarating experience for a 16 year old. After the ride, I wanted one!!! A few others, but maybe I'll cover them later, I have to go fetch supper now... |

WRt the Viceroy I had a Viscount. Straight six 3.3 litre auto 3 speed. Electric windows and a flexible map light in the glove box. Ran it for about a month in the early eighties was H reg iirc. OOh and dad had a Kitten and got a speeding ticket in it
