A moment's silence for yet another brave, lonely spirit, who soldiered on years beyond our asking, before falling to the inevitable fate that awaits us all, so that we may better understand our place in the Universe.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the last panorama taken by the Martian Rover Spirit - http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110530.html

Quote:
Explanation: This is the last thing that the Spirit rover on Mars ever saw. Operating years beyond original expectations, Spirit eventually got mired in martian dirt and then ran out of power when investigating the unusual Home Plate surface feature on Mars. Visible in the above panorama are numerous rocks and slopes of the surrounding Columbia Hills of Mars. The strange hill with the light colored top, visible near the top center of the image, has been dubbed von Braun and was a future destination when Spirit got bogged down. A leading hypothesis holds that von Braun is related to martian volcanism. Last week, NASA stopped trying to contact Spirit after numerous attempts. Half a world away, Spirit's sister rover Opportunity continues to roll toward Endeavour Crater, which could become the largest crater yet visited by an earthling-created robot.

Farewell, gentle soul, farewell.

I hate to anthropomorphise technology, but I genuinely feel a little sorry for the little guy.
I'm accepting donations for a mission to collect and return his little robot corpse for a proper burial, btw.

I'm sorry, but like Alex I really feel for Spirit. Especially having read that cartoon.

What about poor Opportunity? Shouldn't we get 'him' too?

*checks Wikipedia*

He's still going! He's doing a much better job than Spirit.

reminds me of that transformers film where a similar device "died" and the last thing it saw was an alien, so nasa are prob lying to the world as they prob saw aliens as its last thing and wanted the whole thing covered up so they make excuse that it somehow ran out of power :( and thats where the idea was put in that film, the same film where they insist pyramids were also built by aliens somewhat teaching kids the wrong "facts"

Each of the rovers carries a picture of a Lego minifig. One just died.

Yeah, maybe there was only one seat available for the ride home; helluva incentive. ;)
