Now don't get me wrong I enjoy working for my current company but I have not been able to have a proper holiday for almost 6 years as they have no one to cover me if I am away. I'm now feeling "burned out" and so quietly looking for something else. Which companies would people suggest I look at re. IT jobs ?

Surely holiday cover is their problem, not yours? If you're entitled to holiday, I'd take it - you get thought no better of for not doing so.

I'm sure you're legally entitled to 21 days a year (or something like that).

If it was me, I'd be taking my annual 21 days or so backdated six years. Mmm, six months' holiday. Nice.

If you don't take them, aren't they required to pay you for them instead. (Not sure if it's at normal or overtime rate.)

Wherever I've been it's been the case of "you don't take it, you lose it".

Quite. But John's obviously doing something about it, so let's cut him a break! Does nobody have a suggestion for which companies to look at? Personally, if I had skills, I'd be looking at self-employment...

Well, as for suggestions - and don't laugh - and if you can stomach a move to Kent, you could look for IT work with Saga. http://www.saga.co.uk/jobs-at-saga/care ... operly.aspIt's worth a look, surely.

Well I have looked into going self-employed before as I've had a few requests from friends-of-friends for IT assistance in the past - be it hardware or software. Problem is you are starting from a zero client base. I've had a look at "TotalJobs" which looks promising.

Why not just get a support contract with an IT company to assist you when you're stuck & provide support when you're on holiday.
We do this for lots of our customers

What he said. If you fancy it you can just randomly pick up all your servers and move them to a different office, then phone up your outsourced dudes and make it their problem. I can promise you that they love this sort of thing.
