so ironic this, I know EXACTLY how to drive trains (electric and diesel) every button and I know the signalling and track system etc but Im struggling with booking to go down to england :( using trainline.co.uk it says what time u will depart and arrive, as I need a return ticket, if I say when I will depart etc does it mean you HAVE to enter and leave the train at the time you specified? or can it be any time of the day you booked? so confusing

Yes.
Unless you opt for an 'open return', which allows you to return at anytime up until a certain date (but probably outside rush hour).

As you know how to drive a train why don't you just hijack one and drive it yourself. You could wear your balaclava and brandish an anti-aircraft (train in this case) gun.

Hold that thought. ;)

If one is diving so close to the limits that +/- 1% will make a difference then the error has already been made.

Knowing how to drive a train doesn't mean you can understand the UK rail ticketing system. I like the hijacking idea.

Just in case you weren't sure, this is the correct answer!!

If you choose a specific time on a Virgin train then you get a reserved seat. There's a little LCD display above the seat with a number on and it says "reserved". That's your seat on that train, and your ticket is not valid on any other train.

If you can afford the extra, then an "open" ticket is a lot less stressful - especially on the return home if you can't be sure you'll make it on time. Do be aware though, that "rush hour" often covers 7am-11am and 3pm-7pm or around there. It does for Manchester to London anyway.

I'm a big fan of Virgins btw - very comfy. Standard class is better than first class on most other services, and they're seriously fast. I love the way all the pylons lean over to 20 degrees when you go round corners at 120mph :D
