Well, here's the back story (kinda). I want to go to Uni, simple as. But, I missed out of starting the coming year, partly because of the fact I didn't really want to go, I was sick of college at the time, plus I didn't know what grades I was going to achieve (predictions mean diddly squat), so I let the chance slide. But, now I've finished. And have 3 Distinctions, equivalent to 3 A's at A-Level, and 320 UCAS points...I think Right, here's the thing, whilst my above grades appear to fit many of the Uni's requirements at that level, it's my GCSE's that are the let down, particularly my Maths, I only gained a C, I've seen a lot of Uni's asking for a B in this subject, how lenient they'll be towards me if I apply I don't know. Oh, it may help if I mention the course I've just completed... ND Systems Support and Networking. This included some CISCO stuff and general networking, repair and maintenance of PC's etc. really. I've been looking at Northampton Uni, in particular the two courses below; Computing (Computer Networks Engineering) BSc (Hons)OR Computing (Mobile Computing) BSc (Hons)On the face of it, both courses make me a Bachelor Of Science, which sounds rather flashy But anyway, what can you people suggest? It doesn't have to be Northampton, I just REALLY want to get away from the South West, I need a break from all the buggering cows!! Cheers mbm P.S. Need any more info? Just ask

Can I ask why? Was specifically it that the course fits with what you want to do? I've never really held Northampton in high regard, but that's probably just snobbish of me because I live here - and also I remember it as "Nene College of Further Education". I also considered it more of an arts college than a technical one. However, I have absoluetely no experience of the place. They might have the best IT tutors around for all I know. I'm slightly surprised you can get a BSc in those subjects. I guess I'm old and out of touch, but if you do go there I'll buy you a pint http://www.northampton.ac.uk/about/history/

Reason I've chosen them? The fact they're asking for only a C at GCSE Maths, that's all I got out of it, and just probably, so maths isn't my strong point really, everywhere else wants a B, if I can get into them great, but I decided to aim a little lower, for something that I consider more realistic.
Cheers for the help though (Y)

ABERYSTWYTH! A guy a work with did a networking course at Sheffield, he said he was sick of it by the time he finished (though he does recommend the course), I know others in their final years who have specialised in certain areas and are sick of it...Just be sure you want to specialise! I can only speak for Aber, I enjoy the course most of the time, they have learnt a lot while I have been there and have recently refreshed most of the 1st and 2nd year courses, good for Weasel, not for me May have to crash some next year... I do just computer science, not specialising in anything, though I'll be basing my dissertation around system design/administration. They seem to specialise, as a department, in robotics, AI and computer theory (maths and reasoning and stuff) Aber didn't ask for anything at GCSE grades, and because I went for an informal interview, they dropped my entry requirements from 270 points to 220 points, which I didn't need, but was handy. Aber have recently achieved some award or something, clicky. I would HIGHLY recommend choosing a degree with a sandwich year, your degree may change from a BSc to a BEng (see someone who thinks about stuff, to someone who does stuff, or so I've been told), and the potential experience to be gained is huge! That said, you've got to choose the right placement, for you and your future plans (IMO).

Unless they've changed it in the last 12 years, I think you mean 30 points.

An A was 120 points at A-level when I was going through them four years ago...A 'C' was 80, I was lined up for mostly C's, so I remember AS-levels were worth half as much as their equivalent A-level EDIT: Clicky for A-levelsClicky for BTEC (Is that what you did mbm?)

Well, here's a link to my grades, with the UCAS points tariff thingy in it as well. LinkSo yes Lev, it has changed forquare1 - Yeah, I did do a BTEC, see above link I've also come across this Uni, it looks pretty good, and seems a fair bit more interesting that the other 2 in my OP.

At Bath they "require" A level maths, but I know at least one person in my year who doesn't have it. E-mail the admissions people and ask at anywhere you want to apply to. Also, what do you plan to do between now and starting your course?

Now? Continue working where I am, save up the money needed for uni (not the grant, don't have to worry about that), I don't see the point in looking for another job right now, especially with the amount of people looking for them as well. And I'll e-mail them about the maths when I narrow it down to a few Uni's I like the look of.

Shows how old I am then. Back in my day A level points were, A=10, B=8, C=6, D=4 and E=2. AS levels were worth half that.

I'm at Portsmouth and I love it. I'm doing "computer network management and design" but I might switch to network security. I've just finished my first year and as it stands I'm on a BSc, although the department is ECE (electronic and computer engineering) and the department are trying to get the course chartered by the IET (institute of engineering and technology). If that happens then it'll be a BEng. For some reason, everyone seems to think that's a really good thing although I'm not sure why. As I see it, the fact that it's chartered by the IET would be the main attraction rather than the fact it would be a BEng. Anyway, I'm rambling. Whichever university you choose, I hope you enjoy it. Expect everyone to say their university is great by the way lol

I think I'll go there then! Just been clicking around on the UEA site, looks like a really nice Uni, so I think that'll be on the list of possibilities. Any other Uni's people may want to recommend?

Don't look at your weakest result and choose a uni base don that! ie don't go to northampton just because they accept maths idiots, look at your strongest areas and choose a uni based on them, then go and show them that they want a student like you.
