I'm looking for a good hotel (not too expensive, but needs to be clean and comfortable, so not the cheapest dive either).

Obvious question : when? Next weekend are the FA Cup semi finals at Wembley and the London Marathon, so I suspect you'll struggle to find a reasonably priced room inside the M25 that weekend.

June and relatively central, we'll be coming in from Stanstead and going on down to the south coast a few days later... My girlfriend and her daughters have never seen England, so I want to show them the sights in London, before visiting family.

Well there is the site http://www.laterooms.com/ which is pretty good and a government website apparently.

Will you be using public transport or driving a car?

Towards the upper end of the scale I highly recommend one of the London Marriott hotels. If you don't mind a tube/overground journey out of London there are cheaper ones in places like Waltham Abbey. Liverpool Street station serves there, if memory serves.

There's a holiday inn round here ( W1) that should be less than £120 a night per room.

We'll be using public transport in London. I didn't see any point in renting a car, whilst in London. Once we go down south, we'll need a car, but in London, it doesn't make sense.

If you drive over find a hotel with a car park or visit friends and family first and leave the car there, and take a day trip to London. From where I am there are cheap combined bus and train tickets that get me into London and back and cheaper than away day tickets. If in central London get a all day bus ticket £4.60 or so and you can sight see while you are traveling. Make sure you have loaded the iPhone with London travel apps.

Whenever we go to London, about twice a year at the moment, we always book a very central hotel, usually through LastMinute. It’s cheaper to stay further out, but when you allow for the cost of travel plus the time wasted travelling, then I think it’s worth the extra expense. If you’re based in the Oxford Street/Regent Street area, then you can pretty much walk to most places, which is much the best way of getting around. Especially if the purpose of the trip is to see London.
