Well, I guess it had to happen. YouTube can now convert your boring old 2D videos into exciting space-age 3D.

With mixed results. Actually, pretty poor results. I ten a few of mine through the system, and with my hi-tech red/cyan glasses, I can’t really tell whether it’s 3D or not. Something is happening, but quite what I’m not sure about. I’m seeing a lot of ghosting - that is the red/cyan filters on my glasses don’t match the ones YouTube uses. I have more than one pair, and neither seems to work.

TRy these - you will need the Flash player working, and you’ll need to click on the 3D icon at the bottom of the player to see the 3D versions of the movie.

I don’t know how they are calculating depth, but the only video where I can see it effectively is the last one with the hover fly on a leaf.

Hmmmm. I see what you mean. It both works and doesn't work at the same time. Couldn't get the trebuchet one to work at all really, but the other two videos had some 3D element to them.

I wasn’t expecting the trebuchet one to work either. I’m not so sure about the engine room one myself. The over all effect I am getting is that the image kind of stands out from the screen whilst at the same time having some depth into the screen. The results I am getting from YouTube fall so far short of any of the still I have shot with my Stereoscopic camera that even NASA’s 10% accuracy in recent predictions would be too precise. There is currently no tools in YouTube that would allow me to adjust the depth in the movies to improve the results.

As expected, if you want 3D movies, buy a 3D video camera. Certainly don’t rely on automatic 3D conversion algorithms.
