quite a tricky question as no doubt ill be wanting to visit "behind enemy lines" soon again when I visit friends living in England, just if anyone knows any awesome places in England, was considering leeds on the way to leicester but it looked really boring and smaller than id imagined, London is out of the question as I hate it, Sheffield looked truly awful, all the little towns looked bleak, depressing and all the same, I love places with lots of colourful graffiti in citys and near railtracks, what places have WW2 museums? is sussex any good?? any suggestions would be awesome ![]() ps Im highly attracted to places that have lots of remains of ww2 "furniture" especially coastal |

Well if it's WWII you're interested in, I can thoroughly recommend the RAF museum at Duxford near Cambridge. Just fantastic for 'pre jet age' aircraft. If the weather's nice they generally have at least one WWII era aircraft up in the air being given a test flight most days. Plus there's a tank museum on the south coast somewhere IIRC but I haven't visited that since I was kid. Further north the Imperial War Museum at Salford Quays (Manchester-ish) is well worth a visit. I like Sheffield and if you want war stuff then the Imperial War Museum is in Leeds. There's plenty of graffiti in both. |

Oh yup, York. Lovely place. If you're looking for graffiti it's not great though. |

Cornwall is THE best area of foreign England. It also has a history of connection with D-Day, from embarkation points, to practice landings. Near my old place on the Roseland is Tolverne a.k.a. Smuggler's Cottage. This was area command for embarkation to Omaha, has a grunt built road and was visited by Eisenhower. There are a variety of military installations, both abandoned and active, in a variety of sizes from pillbox to the largest helicopter base in Europe (RNAS Culdrose, nr Helston). The NSA Eschelon system has a listening post in Morwenstow nr. Bude on the North Coast right on the Devon border (which I figured would be your kind of thing). The dishes there are dwarfed by the ones at Goonhilly, but you can get in there anymore. Of course that said, you can't exactly walk into an Echelon facility either, but I figured that would be a Bratty-type thing. On that theme, RAF Portreath (locally known is Nancekuke) has an awesome strip for drag racing, but was also a massive part of the UK's chemical weapons program during the cold war and had stocks of Sarin and VX. If that's not enough Bratty-ness, Cornwall is also the most geographically similar to Scotland in all of foreign England. AND many Cornish people dislike the foreign English just as much as you and your countrymen. Honestly, I'm not sure where could be more perfect for you.... |

Bovington Went there 25 years ago and certainly enjoyed myself. Somewhere near Poole. Hendon is also quite good as a flight museum. Managed to make it there last year. |

What about RAF Conningsby, near Lincoln? It has some WWII planes, and also the Euro fighters. |

Well, if you’re heading South, there’s Bletchley Park near Minton Keynes. That’s got a lot of WWII architecture, as well as examples of the machinery used to crack Enigma. Lots of examples of German crypto graphical machines as well. Sound mirrors at Denge? ![]() http://www.andrewgrantham.co.uk/soundmirrors/ Other sites available too ![]() Closer to (my) home, there’s the Secret Nuclear Bunker at Kelvedon. It’s a Cold War construction, refitted for government during a nuclear strike. |

I am surprised no one has suggested Salisbury Plain. Plenty of live ammo for Bratty to hunt for. --- I am here: http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=50.804114,-0.058239 Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk. |
