OK so after all the hype I watched it last weekend. I thought it was a good film but not the earth shattering, 8 oscar winning, amazing film it was advertised as.

It really pisses me off when films are so hyped in the media they're a big let down when you finally see them.

Same thing happened with Mamma Mia, it was alright but I felt really let down at the end as I was expecting so much more.

Anyone else want to share?

C

In order to earn critical acclaim a movie has either got to be depressing, excessively morose or feature a <insert ethnic group here> enduring great adversity. Comedies or action movies need not apply. Movies that get panned by critics are the ones you want to see - there's some hope of leaving the cinema happy.

yes the blu ray was nice quality and to be honest i quite enjoyed the film as for mama mia!! well......i have no interest in watching that at all.....yack.
oscar nominations are a pile of bullocks personally speaking.
while were on the subject of films,we watched "angels and demons" last night, not a bad thriller and the night before we watched "knowing" which was ok but i spent the majority of the film wishing it wouldnt end like i thought it was going to but it did. a bit of a bummer really :x

Over-hyped movies IMO (I predict a riot, I predict a riot...):

Grosse Pointe Blank, Independence Day, Jurassic Park, Face/Off, Saw, Gran Torino (good, but not what it was hailed as), Out of Sight (f**k you, movie mags! :x ), The Blair Witch Project... I'll add others as they come to me ;)

Put it this way, even terrestrial TV doesn't seem interested in showing it as often as it could, know what I mean? ;)

I'd add all Superman and Batman films which were all hyped to the hilt and were utter dross IMHO - but I don't like the comic-strip genre so maybe I'm not the best judge.

One film that surprised me was Crash. It won the Oscar over Brokeback Mountain whose gay theme was supposed to be too much for Hollywood to vote for as the best film so they voted for Crash's safe racial theme. I thought both films were rather good, no horse in the street were frightened by Brokeback Mountain and Crash was rather clever and thought provoking.

Behind Enemy Lines
The Matrix
Saving Private Ryan
Star Wars I - III
Equilibrium
The Aviator
Catch Me If You Can
Armageddon
Lost in Space
Crash

All significantly overrated IMO

Couldn't care less about award ceremonies and magazine reviews, the IMDB rating system hasn't let me down yet, if it scores less than 7 steer well clear. The hype is created by adverts, again, they don't affect me :).

Edited to add:

Black Hawk Down - pants.

Dark Knight, Serenity, Sweeny Todd, 300, Casino Royale, X Men 2 and 3...

However I did enjoy (if that's the right word) The Reader which had a lot of hype.

It was hyped in some quarters - Quantum of Solace, I don't know a single person who liked that film, and we're including women who'll watch anything Mr Craig so much as farts in, there...
