Hi all,

I'm looking at new contracts for my phone, a lot of them seem to be 24 month contracts. Is there usually any way to upgrade the handset (iPhone) in that time? Or does one have to wait the full 24 months?
I enquire especially about the iPhone because obviously I have to pay something towards it and wouldn't expect it free...

You can only upgrade your handset if you buy the new one sim free or buy out your existing contract and start a new one.

I thought OfCom won a recent battle with the mobile service providers, over the increase in 24 month contracts.

Did this come to nought?

You can get shorter contracts, but obviously there will then be a cost associated with the handset.

Hmmm. If I buy a sim free iPhone I'll never recoup the costs...I'll have to wait and hope the Tesco iPhone 4S offers are the same as their iPhone 4 offers...I just wish they'd hurry up and update their website!

Three only appear to offer 24 month iPhone contracts...I know I could get an iPhone sim free, but as I said above, I'd never recoup my costs...

Not even after you sold it?

I can get about £250 for an iPhone 4, an iPhone 4S sim free is £499 - The same price the iPhone 4 was this time last year.
With my contract with Tesco, I only paid a little over £200 for my handset.

Seems like a waste of money to me mate.

So I'll wait and see what Tesco brings out, hopefully they'll do 12 month contracts again.

iPhone 4's are going for £340-500 on the bay at the moment

That's what they want you to think. ;)

I did this last year on my iPhone.
I worked it out that, on the contract I was on, paying outright left me £20 better off after two years, compared to taking the phone out for a two year contract on the equivalent tariff.
Which works out fine for me, because I'm not interested in the 4s, so I'll wait for the next version, whenever it gets released.

For me it was better to buy an iPhone SIM free from Apple and stay on my £20 simplicity contract rather sign up to a new 18/24 month contract. I sent my old 3G to Mazuma to cover some of the cost of new phone. Mazuma gave me the same amount as for the 3G as I paid for it.

I forgot about this. I sent my 3G of to one of the recycling places and got £200 for it, which went towards the upgrade.
