It shouldn't be bricked but have had this happen before.

Not sure about mac but if windows, disable all firewalls and try again. It's taking people quite a few goes too because so many are trying to access their servers.

I got past that part and now I have the original problem that bricked it in the first place...

"An unknown error occurred (3004)."

As above, a quick search of the Apple forums suggests that their server are overloaded causing the error. If "trying again later" doesn't work, apparently you can down recboot_v1.1 to kick it out of recovery mode if it gets stuck there.

Failing that, I'm out of ideas (read:Google gave me nothing else).

Thanks both.

Thankful.y "trying again later" did eventually work.

I now have a factory version of iOS5 with none of my stuff on it.

Just need to restore the backup now.

Phew!

2 attempts at the download and 5 attempts at the update and I'm almost there!

Looks like I'll be keeping my iPhone away from my PC until all this blows over.

(There's a Shaun of the Dead joke around here somewhere)

I've seen enough bricked Linux machines in my time! Bricking has nothing to do with the openness of the software or the cost, it is purely down to QA and nobody is perfect.

The only good thing I've noticed so far is that I can redownload my previous itunes content (at least songs, not sure about videos).

It's crashed twice on me and I've had to force an iTunes shutdown at least three times.

In this case, it's down to demand and I think you'd be far fetched to propose that any Linux distributor could cope with this level of demand smoothly. Google and Amazon might have the server farms to deal with it but I doubt anyone else would.

What IS weird is seeing your device listed in iTunes, even though you haven't got it plugged in....
(note: I had similar problems to the OP with upgrading my iPad but it also worked after a few tries, I'm leaving my phone as it is for a few days.)

Something I've noticed on ios 5 that hasn't been mentioned before. Asynchronous downloading of app updates.

If you have multiple updates the phone will download the first one and as soon as it starts installing will then start downloading the second, then the third and so on.

I had about 5 apps all installing at the same time.

Much better that way than before.

It's probably down to Apple's servers being completely overwhelmed with users trying to update.
