Post subject:  Security Cameras

As mentioned in the FPOTD thread I have to buy a couple of security cameras, (wireless and I'd prefer it if they could upload directly to my web space) as I noticed this morning that someone keeps moving one of the garden chairs from the front garden to the back and is using it to climb over the little shed as a cut through. No doubt it's one of the local thieving scrotes, but I'm not allowed to put up razor wire.

Any ideas/opinions/suggestions, (about what cameras I can buy, not what I should do about the gits who keep cutting through my garden to get away from the cops) would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

John.

I thought most IP cameras came with an ftp capability built in.

An email from a mate of mine

Quote:
I mainly use IP webcams made by Axis (http://www.axis.com). The model of camera I use is the 207W (http://www.axis.com/products/cam_207w/index.htm), which has its own web server for viewing the live image and for configuration etc. It supports motion detection, audio and video recording and can upload images and videos to an ftp server or via attachments to email. It can be hard-wired or operate over a 54g wireless network. It’s basically a mini Linux box with a camera attached. The picture quality is good compared to other cameras, maximum image resolution is 640x480 @ 30 frames/second. It’s not cheap, Amazon currently sell it for £260. They do a cheaper model without wireless (the 207) for £242 and a bottom end camera (the 206) for £208. It is not weatherproof though, for full outdoor cameras you need to spend a lot more – something I haven’t ventured into. Reliability-wise, mine (I have two Axis 207w’s) have been fine for 2 years. They will run for months without needing any attention.

Because the axis cameras are self-contained units, they don’t need a pc to operate. They just basically need an Internet connection. They support dynamic DNS so you can configure them to update their ip address against a DNS name automatically if you need external access to the camera. I basically use mine without direct external access and just get them to upload images via ftp when the motion detection is triggered. All I have is a web site that displays the images in sequence (the camera can be configured to index the images up to a given number and then overwrite the oldest). There’s a good review of them here http://www.trustedreviews.com/networkin ... -Camera/p1

I do have some software I run on a pc if I want to use USB cameras or less versatile ip cameras. It’s called VisionGS and is the best software I’ve seen for this purpose for the price ($30). You can get a demo copy here http://www.visiongs.de/ The Axis cameras will work with this software too, but really you don’t need to because they can perform all of the software functions autonomously.

I’ve also got an older Linksys ip camera but I don’t rate it compared to the Axis products.

Hope that helps

I was looking into security cameras for a company a few years back, we settled on Axis, I was able to test them, but I never got to see them in place :(
Axis do make some good cameras, they are damn expensive though :(

I'll add that three years ago, D-Link were a terrible choice. We got a few different models in the demo, they didn't have half the features, the quality was terrible, and they all overheated of you left them on for more than 12 hours...Not sure what they are like now.

Perhaps a security light would be enough to scare them away?

Plant roses or gorse bushes. Nothing like some dangerous spiky plants to help with security.

That'll just make it easy for them to see what they're doing!

Build your fence or whatever a little higher, and put some thin wire through it.

Wire these to a cattle prodder. It's not illegal if you have a sign up to warn them. :)

Use your imagination, Mr Vella. ;)

Redesignate your garden an agricultural zone and say you are going to have a pony/cow/pig etc. in the garden you can put up an electric fence (at least here you can)

That's actually a pretty good plan. Make the route as unpleasant as possible.
Unlike razor wire and other solutions offered, there is nothing to stop you planting really nasty sharp plants.
I used to water the gardens of a hotel, and they had the front hedge full of very unpleasant spiky things. The biggest hassle we had was people leaving crisp packets in it on their way home from school.

Blackthorn FTW!

It produces a lovely white blossom in early Spring, you can use the fruit to make sloe gin and it's spiky as hell!

Add a smattering of dog rose and you'll be well sorted.

When I lived in Grimsby I had a similar problem, except we were students. The local druggies used to cut down and alley and walk across our garden to get to another alley and then the main road. The main issue was the house had a wall which had fallen down and two mattresses dumped in it by the landlord made scaling the other wall a real doddle.

Was ok until we started to find needles and stuff in the garden as they must have stopped on route to shoot up. Being students we pondered various remedies and barbed wire on the gap wasn't an option, neither was moving the mattress elsewhere. So we dug a trench about 5 ft deep and covered it with twigs and leaves, just in front of the second wall.

Next person who tried the shortcut fell in. Caught about three people out before they stopped doing it.
