How would one go about finding the particular details on the sale/auction of a property known to be "confiscated" (I'm sure that's not the term) by HMRC?

You could wait until you see the auctioneers sign outside advertising the sale then go to them for the details.

Estate agents will have a list of repossessions too. They can be much, much cheaper because they’ll be in a bit of a sorry state. If the mess is cosmetic (i.e. the place isn’t structurally bereft), then it will be worth a punt.
