So, as I'm sure you are all aware, we now have a rather lovely little boy called Oliver. Understandably he will normally be known by an abbreviation of that; the question is how to spell said abbreviation, as there are quite a few varieties. Thought I'd put it to a vote on here, at least for my own amusment. I may or may not pay any attention to the result! |

I voted Oli. It's the version I use (well, other people use when referring to me). I tend to use Oliver myself. |

I would (and have) spelt it "Oli" IMO it's not much of a shortening of a name if you have to add 2 extra letters to write it down. Unless you were going to call him Olliever. Which you're not. |

I did consider that, but then some people refer to me as "Ted" or "Teddy". And I know I don't use the most efficient spelling of "Ed" possible. I think I'm a touch odd, but I do like the way some words look. |

I think Ollie is for people who are called Ollie by everyone and generally "known" as Ollie. Oli is a shortening of the name of people who are "known" as Oliver. If that makes sense. I would never introduce myself as Oli but a friend of mine who is always known as Ollie introduces himself to people as Ollie. |

The problem with Oli is that you wouldn't read it right - it spells Oh-Lee as in Oh, Lee - not again. At least, that's how I'd read it. You need the double ll to make Olly or Ollie. I prefer Ollie. However, shortened forms aren't that often written down, are they? J. |

Agreed. I would suggest keeping everything as Oliver when writing it down. I don't think I've ever seen my name written as Oli apart from in the odd FB status or Tweet or text etc... Anything I've got that has my name on it from when I was a baby says "Oliver". |

Obviously there's a bit of choice involved. You've got Oliver Hardy spelling it that way yet there's a rugby player who publicly goes by the name Olly Barclay. Jon |
