End of the year, thought you’d appreciate an update on my grandma, who as you may remember, suffered a bit of a meltdown earlier this year. She is settled in a nursing home. In fact, the home in question has been described by one of my other half’s aunts as a “country hotel” when her mother was in care. I’m surprised by this comment, but the aunt in question is very fussy about such things. It’s certainly clean, well kept and the staff are attentive to the needs of the residents. So, my grandma is doing well. However, it’s obvious that she’s not got all her faculties, and her memory is not as it was. For example, last week, I took a Christmas card to her. It’s one of mine, and it has a couple of dinosaurs (of the plastic variety) in the snow with scarves on (picture taken last winter). This week, we thought it would be a good idea to take the dinosaurs as they were of interest last week. These acted as quite a cue - she recognised them, and spoke about seeing a picture of them the previous week. My mum, who was there, got the card from her room and we had a talk (again) about the dinosaurs, where they came from and the way I took the photo to make them look big. But she gets weepy - she cried a little when I gave her a small goodie bag of biscuits and a chocolate orange today. She also sometimes forgets what she’s talking about and gets frustrated. She also does not seem to follow the passage of time as well now. However, on the whole, she seems better than she was. She’s certainly happy - and I know that when I’m there (or my mum or my sister), she’s happy to see us. I’m never sure, though, how long that happiness lasts, and whether she remembers the visit an hour or so later. I guess she’s living more in the moment, and if she’s happy now then that’s probably as good as it can get. So it’s a funny old time. Good and bad. I know she’s slowly saying goodbye as her condition deteriorates. I don’t know how long it will be before she stops “living” and starts just “existing”. So we are enjoying the company as often as we can. |

It's good and bad. She's frail, yes, but not on her death bed. Other half says that this slow "slipping away" is nature's way of saying "good bye" and preparing us for the inevitable. What I miss are the piles of Guardian articles she'd collate for me to read and the discussions we'd have about them. I'm watching my mum with her. It's like watching her direct a slightly disinterested cat at times. I have to watch my mum. She's been hit hardest by this and right now, she's coping. I expect a time when it will get more difficult. |

Actually, to make a bit of light of the subject, talking to her now is a bit like watching streaming video. Every so often you'll get a "buffering" dialogue window, or a "memory access failure" error, or possibly a "time code mismatch" error. She'd appreciate the joke/observation, to be honest. She has still her keen interest technology (the iPad s a thing of wonder for her) and likes to know of anything new I have. So my very little Muvi camera went down well ![]() |
