My sister had her iPhone stolen tonight whilst out with her friends. I suspect the inevitable happened - she keeps the damn thing on the table facing her so she can responds to texts/calls etc, not realising the security risk it poses.
Anyway, she doesn't have a mobileme account or anything similar, so I guess there's no way of tracking it. I've asked that she calls her phone company and get them to block it.
Any other advice? Will find out more when she comes back home later tonight.

Any chance of getting something like Prey on it? I think on the android one (or it's another app) you can remote install it then it activates when you install another app

Find my phone only works if you have an iCloud account. Which, CW, I'd suggest you tell your sister to get when she has her phone replaced. You don't have to use any of the other features if you don't want to, but given it's now free I don't see any reason not to use it just for 'find my phone'.
Other that that... you're probably out of luck. You can remote install apps on an iPhone via the app store, but you can't remote run them. So even if you could get a tracker app on there, you'd have to somehow convince whoever had to to run the thing.

Does she have an iTunes account (i.e. to download music and apps etc...) If she has that then she more than likely has an iCloud account. (I think). Go onto www.icloud.com and try to log in using her iTunes account credentials. If that works there is a a "Find my iPhone" button. If not, make sure she has it set up next time.

Only works if you've previously switched the feature on on the phone first. +1. Jon

Keep an eye on eBay listings in your local area and look out for listings that say the phone is blocked/won't work in the UK, then tip off the Police - selling a phone that has been blocked in the UK is illegal anyway, so you're doing someone a favour even if it's not your missing phone.

Well had a chat with her just now. She was in a restaurant with fiance and a few friends. She bad been good in keeping the phone in her pocket but left it on the table. Someone came up to sell phonecards, leant over and that's probably when he stole it.
Classic Real Hustle stuff. Phone company have been informed. She was set up on icloud so that has been set to wipe the phone. She had recently backed everything up just after new year.
Fiance wants to buy her a new 4S. I've offered her my old 3GS - facetime is the only real thing she would miss. I've managed to have a chat with her about security, using her feelings of guilt and unsafe-ness.

She was in a restaurant and somebody came up to her table 'selling phone cards'? Seriously? I'd have stern words with whoever was running that restaurant. Whether they know what the guy was up to or not, you really shouldn't let your customers be hassled while they're in your premises.

I have to say, that's more like something I've seen in dodgy Belfast pubs than any restaurant I've been in
