Nearly got me!
Googled a topic - dentures and epilepsy, nothing dodgy. One of the links took me to a legit looking site, took a long time to load.
Then IE shut down, all the running windowed programs disappeared, Security essentials closed - or appeared to, and a legit looking interface purporting to be AVG 2012 started to "run a scan" immediately finding a virus. Options to install fulll producet to clean the machine, nothing else would start and task manager wouldn't run.
Closed down while resisting the temptation to click anything. On restart immediately got the same interface. Safe mode and system restore fixed that.
They're getting better.

The fake anti-virus scan is a classic. Some are more convincing than others. However, one dirty word there. I can't imagine many people on here recommending IE

Shouldn't IE prevent that sort of crap from running?

Not an unreasonable assumption to make, but sadly wrong

No browser blocks javascript out the box with exception of IE on a non intranet site on a server install. JS is what most of them use aside from plugins (which are fine if its not installed) You can turn it off... but the net just isn't as good

See this is why I like the NoScript plugin for Firefox.

+1 I use NoScript and Flashblock (blocks Java and Silverlight as well, only loading them, when you click on the "play" button). I also use a plugin to force https connections on sites, if they support https.

Unfortunately NoScript is pretty much useless for end-users - it's far too complex.
Plus it's bloody irritating, which is why I don't use it.

Really? It's too complicated for people like my dad, but I wouldn't have though anyone on here would struggle with it.

Yes, but then most of us really aren't normal end-users.

I think it's more down do patience than ability. I'm sure my dad could easily learn to use it, he just couldn't be bothered to use it.
