Just been looking at the BT fibre rollout. There's one obscure little area in the middle of nowhere near us that's enabled. Nothing nearby business wise. Nowhere else even on the schedule.

My thought was "Who lives there then?" BT senior management?

FTTC is deliberately being rolled out in far-flung areas that are too far from the exchange to receive decent ADSL. Cornwall was the first area to be prioritised, but it's slowly getting there. BT are actually ahead of schedule for once.

Well BT are supposed to by upgrading the exchange near us at work "by 1st March 2012"

Once that's done we can look at a proper DR plan, move to VOIP and do much more video conferencing.

One of our homeworkers got upgraded just before Christmas and he has gone from 2.5mb/s to 37.5mb/s

Other countries still piss all over our bandwidth.

As far as I know BT have no plans to upgrade our local exchange anytime soon. But that's fair enough, I get the full 20meg connection (from Plusnet) as it is. I don't really need anything faster.

Yep, same here. I get around 15mbps from a 20 meg line, but I'm not expecting BT to upgrade within the next year or two.

That's the bit I'm not so sure about. Considering the rate of progression right now, and how much technology has changed over the last couple of years, I'm not entirely sure a 20meg line will cut it in another two or three years.

I'd imagine by then Youtube and the like will be bordering on 1080p for virtually all commercial video. A family with competing online interests could quickly find that bandwidth isn't stretching as far as they'd all like.

Given the ubiquity of camera phones/tablets etc.. how before video microblogging becomes the norm? I can see twitter or Facebook pushing that.

The roll-out in Cornwall is being funded by the European Union, not because BT are feeling altruistic.

As long as I can stream iPlayer on my TV, I'm happy.
If they start streaming shows in HD on iPlayer then I'll want that. I'd imaging my current 20meg connection could cope with that. I may be wrong though.

No industry that wasn't as heavily regulated as they are would bother with putting FTTC into green boxes around Piddle under Puddle, but they are required to service the entire country and have certain targets to meet.

Is fttc the same as bt infinity? As I'll apparently be getting that at work in April. Probably because of the Olympics. I don't care why, I'll be signing up for 300 meg as soon as possible anyway.

Are you sure about your home? Most houses have a cabinet somewhere much closer than the exchange.

All shows or is there something special you have to do?
Weirdly I did think it was much more crisp on my HDTV than on my computer. I wonder if it's been HD without me realising.

I dunno about all shows, but 100% sure about the modern Doctor Who for example because I was taking lovely 1080p stills from it!

That says you need 3.5 megs for HD.

Is that satellite or ISDN dialup? I guess it explains why you don't often watch the Youtube videos!

I was on 64K ISDN for ages because our exchange wasn't ADSL enabled until the very end of the roll-out. It was sooo painful to use when I had my Anime downloading, which was equivalent to 5 other people trying to use the same connection. Absolutely fine for MSN and email, but suffice to say I never used to order my groceries on-line!
