Well done all. Can I ask the winner (or any one else), although I really liked the winning photo I didn't vote for it as I struggled to identify it with the theme. Am I being thick?

Without doubt, I think it was the best photo, but I had a hard time linking it to the theme. So, I'm probably a bit thick too.

Regardless, congrats to Matt :D

The photo is centred on one star, maybe Alpha Centauri? And Alpha is the first letter in the Greek alphabet, and initial means first.

Now for a quick (hopefully) explanation to the above comments. When I see a new topic I find all the synonyms so I can increase the number of possible subjects. So initial provided primary, first, basic, alpha etc. I had been wanting to take a picture of star trails for a while now, and handily at xmas got a wirless remote/intervalometer. Now stars within a constellation are named according to the Bayer designation, generally that means that the brightest star is given the name Alpha [constellation]. I wanted to get circular/arc trails and that meant having the northern pole star / Polaris in frame, which happens to be the brightest in that constellation. So Alpha Ursae Minoris was the focal point and for a little impact I shortened the name to Alpha. Perhaps I should have left the full name, but I think it helps to make people think about it. :?

Knowing that with long exposures I wouldn't get many attempts it took a fair bit of reading and a little guesswork. I also had to find a suitable low light location and wait for the skies to be clear with little moon. So this shot was taken in the middle of potato field at 03:00, the exposure was for 60 minutes and it was -8 degrees.
