Ooh, interesting. Is time-lapse photography allowed? Whether I'm up to the task is another matter. ![]() |

There is nothing limiting exposure length, but your image should be just a single exposure. |

Why is this (as long as it's in camera and not Photoshop trickery)? |

I think the main reason was to keep it simple and open for all levels of hardware, as not all cameras have bracketing or merge to HDR functions. No reason why it can't be discussed here and a change made with general concensus though. |

Personally, I'd see it as heavy editing - regardless of whether it takes place on camera or not. |

I'd also say then that not all cameras have super high ISO, long exposure functionality or any manual control at all. For example my entry this month would not have been possible on the vast majority of compact point and shoots. Does that put me at an advantage or not? I'm just playing devils advocate but I think if you're saying you can't use a camera function as other cameras might not have that function then where do we draw the line? |

I understand your point, but the rules clearly state:
The original idea behind the competition was it didn't matter what equipment you used, it was the image that counted. If you have a snazzy camera that does HDR in the box, then it should fall within the rules. Now, as to whether I'd actually vote for an image that is obviously HDR is another matter entirely... ![]() |

Doesn't matter now - I can't do what I wanted with my camera. I was hoping to point it a spider's web in the making - single exposure over a long period, in the dark, and hit the flash about once an hour. Is that 'Bulb' mode? Apologies for sparking a debate, purely through aspiration. ![]() |

Generally speaking any exposure over 30 seconds will require your camera to have a Bulb mode, yes. I would say that, technically, the process you describe above would be a single exposure and therefore permissible under the rules of the competition. If it worked I assume you'd end up with a completed web that looked like it had multiple spiders on it. I think of time-lapse as more of a movie type of thing - taking multiple exposures of the same scene over time and compositing them together together to produce a film that condenses the time. Taking multiple exposures to produce a single image is more like HDR photography. I personally like the single picture rule. It keeps the competition more about the individuals eye for a photo and creativity in interpreting the topic rather than the special capabilities of their camera or skills in Photoshop (or equivalent). |

Exactly, what I meant. Thank you
Quite right. I was pretty inarticulate in my original post. ![]() |

I like the idea of the web picture but I think there could be some drawbacks. As each new strand was made and connected it would change the position of the preceeding strands, possibly leading to a blur. However the finished product may actually be quite good. |

You can also get interesting results from messing with those spiders. ![]() |
