Need to make this strange thread as I have just realised a fear that I have that I wasn't fully aware of atall, but belive it or not I genuinely fear the social site Bebo. You will all be thinking WTF? but I find it frightening, I think mainly because people I know there some have moved away very far, when I see comments from people I know it doesn't seem like its actually them, and the pictures etc of them are just differant and it makes them look so differant to reallife, its also seeing everyone I knew from highschool, when I went through their pages I felt really ill. Last week I was feeling down and rather depressed and I understand it was because I went through bebo, cant explain it so I wont bother. (Is this a normal fear?) Also the fact I cant get through to the people I talk to on bebo as in they dont reply etc yet they are great to talk to in reallife so again it feels like a virtual personality im talking to and a real person but both the same person >< Worst fact is that most people I know are on bebo and hardly any on facebook grrrrrr :(

Feel free to laugh at the above btw ^ it sound ridiculous but very real.

I prob mentioned ages ago I have a fear of Totem poles  due to the fact years ago I saw a madmade on in the forest onetime and as it was dark it looked like a girl that had hung herself on a tree with hand sticking out. but when I got close to it, it was just a heavily decorated tree to give out a totem effect :( horrid, so quite fearful of things that stand out in a funny way in the dark especially.

Custompc users may remember when I was age phobia/fear of getting older, I can safely say I dont feel age phobia atall anymore which is really odd :?

So anyone else got proper fears or am I the only one weird enough to actually have any?

Forget about Bebo, in my experience it tends to attract a certain "type" of person that I just can't stand. People who use words such as "lyke"/"my8"/"blud"/"r"/"u" etc. You could be mistaking your fear for a certain type of revulsion >.<

But hey that's just my opinion of the site. Could be very different in other parts of the world

I am scared of spiders. Irrational fear I know, but a common one.

I am also scared of heights; looking down is not a problem, and jumping off a tall cliff or abseiling is not a problem, but looking upwards makes me feel sick and go freezing cold. God knows why. I just don't look upwards.

I'm scared of being alone...

As above, I'm scared of spiders.
I'm not afraid of heights, more I have a distrust for everything and everyone around me. I quite like looking over railings, but then I think "What if these railings gave way!?" or "What if that guy behind me picked up my legs and threw me over", I cant go climbing for the same reason, I can't put my trust in the person belaying or in the rope itself...

I am sometimes afraid of spiders, usually only if they move particularly fast. I am sometimes afraid of the dark if there have been scary books or movies beforehand, and I am sometimes afraid of my own imagination, it does much more harm than anything in real life has ever done.

Otherwise, I do jump quite easily when startled, and the fast-moving crab-heady guys from Half-Life 2 make me jump the most, but actual genuine fears? I don't have many.

Bratty, I apologise for editing your thread title, but it had to be done, m'kay? I have a fear of apostrophes. Especially when they appear in the w'rong places.

:o

*aaaaaaaaaaaagh*

I'm a bit scared of spiders. I tried to rationalise it a while back, and I think it's got something to do with the way their legs all meet up in that knot under their thorax. Eeuw!

Scorpions, too. Same thing, knotty bunch of leggy bits. Ick.

I think there's a deeply hard-wired fear of spiders and their ilk, with good reason, in the human DNA. If you live somewhere tropical, hunting for food and nuts, the spiderkind will most likely be harmful and kill you if you let them. Best to be a bit wary of things with eight legs and knotty bits where they meet underneath (ick).

Of course, in this technological world, where we've sanitised everything to within a nanometre of itself, that fear of spiders now appears misplaced.

I think that's my biggest fear also.

I have a very real fear of the possibility of meeting dangerous or deranged people. I am not so paranoid that I look over my shoulder and all around everywhere I go, but I think that humans are the only things that are capable of being truly evil and I am more scared of them than I am spiders, snakes, lions and any other dangerous or potentially dangerous thing or situation.

When it comes to horror movies, for example. I can watch Hell Raiser, because it is all about demons. I can watch movies about werewolves or vampires, because they are legendary monsters, but I tried watching The Hills Have Eyes a while ago and it was too possible for me to enjoy it and I found it so disturbing that I had to switch it off.

Two things - dogs and heights, but not necessarily together.

The dogs thing is simple - I got jumped on by a very big dog when I was young, and it terrified me. I’ve never been able to trust them since then. Dpgs=bigger than me.

The fear of heights is probably more normal, but for me complex - the fear manifests itself in a desire to step off the high place. I remember being overwhelmed by tis when I was at the top of a minaret in Khiva once. You think that it’s ok because the thing is closed up, so I go up for the view (odd, I know - I like views, but not the feeling of vertical distance). I get to the top, it’s fairly full, and there is a person sized hole. *shudders* I didn’t want to go near it, but at the same time I did. A truly horrible sensation. I felt that at the top of the Eiffel tower too. I think it’s being exposed to the elements - I can’t climb ladders without getting much the same feeling. At the top of the Atomium, I was OK, but it’s sealed in.

Heather, your description is rather colourful and completely illustrates why that fear is one I share.

Bratty, bebo is for weirdos. Fact. No need to fear it, for it can simply be avoided.

I can't think of anything that would class as a true phobia, beyond the spiders thing. I am scared of ending up alone, but only when I really, really think about it.

I had a friend who had a fear of cotton wool. He got some tablets from the doctor but couldn't get them out of the bottle... </really old joke>

For me it's spiders, heights and to some extent flour.

Spiders because they have 8 legs, 8 thousand eyes and love to scurry across the floor.

Heights, well I don't know why but they scare me [LIFTED]. I could go up very high if it was all enclosed (e.g. top of a building, London Eye), but I couldn't go out on the roof of said building, nor can I climb ladders.

Flour - not so much scared of it, but I just can't touch it. When I touch dry flour I get much the same feeling others get when someone runs their nails down a blackboard. :x

Nothing that I can bring to mind, really, so I'll mention two friends phobias.
One doesn't like carpet. Rubbing your hand over the carpet would make her leave the room, same as sweeping it as well.
Another hates the old rotary telephones, or even the push button equivalents with the same handsets. Took one out of a box in front of her and she had to leave the room. She wouldn't even be in the same room as it, even when it was boxed.

Heights - when I look out of a window or stand on a ledge etc. at a height, I get a feeling of euphoria and feel like it is only one small step back down to the bottom, or that I could step off and soar away!

My brother suffers from the same thing - but he found that out after he had climbed Mont Blanc, as a guide for a group of children on holiday. He turned round, sat down and his fingers gripped the rock and were white! It took him several minutes to calm down enough to be able to lead the group back down!

I don't suffer as much, these days, but it can still creep up on me.
