Geek, defined as hands on practical interest in the tech. Applied/ tinkering Nerd, defined as interlectual facination with the science . Theory/ knowledge
Pie, any sort, sweet or savoury. Does not include quiche, tarts or pasties.

Going by this, I would classify myself as a "Nerd". Going by your definitions, I suppose I would be a geek. EDIT: Looking at Wikipedia, I am definitely a nerd.

Those are really not the definitions that geeks and nerds would usually supply. It's a well documented subjected.

my understasnding was that geeks were hardware (techies/design), nerds were software(interlectuals/theory)

My understanding is that you have very narrow definitions of both these terms. You can also be a geek/nerd in almost any category that can be mentioned. Mark
