For those of you who care, I am using an Alpha build of RISC OS running on my RAspberry Pi to make this post. The web browser is one called Netsurf.

I have finally go networking to run on the Pi. I have temporarily disconnected the MacMini to try a few things out. I now need to find my Airport Express and see if that still works (I suspect it is dead though) and use that instead.

Oh, the fun!

Right - as I said, it’ Alpha, and the image is currently semi-official as far as RISC OS Foundation is concerned. It’s got quite clever now - as long as you have a network connection to the Pi, you should be able to apply updates to the SD image from RISC OS itself - and that includes installing ROM images as well.

You need the July 13th image (or later) to start with.

Put this on an SD card on your Pi as normal. When you boot up, it may hang when it gets to DHCP set up - hit escape and let it continue booting into the desktop. Then either set up the network, or disable it (double click on the !Boot file).

By default, you will get a page opening in a browser which tells you what is what, and has links to more updates and downloads.

This site is where the alpha distress are updated, and there are some incremental updates which will give you more RISC OS development software to play with:

The bloody thing uses frames, so you need to click on the Alpha Testing links to get to those. Just apply Update 5 - 8 by downloading them in RISC OS, unzipping them (using !SparkFS). There are read me files that tell you how to do this.

This rather long thread will give you an idea of what is going on, problems, bugs etc..

Remember - it’s Alpha. No sound, the pointer is wonky, and you’ll get crashes at times. Also older RISC OS software is written for 26bit addressing, and the newer versions of the OS (and ARM processors) do full 32-bit addressing, so some older applications (like games) may not work.
