I find the whole Scientology thing to be so ridiculous that it's fascinating! What interests me most there though is the questions around publication of that:

Are they so certain of the facts that they went ahead?

Are they hoping Cruise/Team Scientology would never challenge it cos then they'd have to answer direct questions in court?

I mean it's one hell of a story (by Vanity Fair of all people) in this celebrity-obsessed culture of ours... But anyway, I'm interested in any opinions you have on Scientology. Do you think it's dangerous for instance?

I personally find it incredible that anyone would even consider it, never mind devote their life to it. I also think it must be one hell of an operation to have so many well-known faces and still not be ripped apart by today's media. Maybe they're somewhat complicit :) . It just seems like too big a story for the press to ignore, maybe this is the start of something bigger.

Cult / religion, same premise, different extremes.

I'm not so sure. I mean some cult leaders are obviously in it purely for the power and money, but nowhere near the scale of Scientology.

And other lower scale religions are in it for the young boys and subjigation of women. You don't have to be in a cult for the power, or the money, any mainstream religion will do.

I'm talking about the sheer organisation and secrecy of Scientology's activities in this day and age, compared to other cults/religions. I'd argue their influence is getting weaker by the day while Scientology seems to get ever stronger, and with a lot of grown adults who should definitely know better! Though maybe the economic climate will be a boon to the 'mainstream'...

Are you suggesting that other religions don't have vetting processes for priests, their congregation or partners (if applicable), and don't have any secrets?

In the past the Catholic church has 'converted' populations under threats of violence. Some present religions prohibit interfaith marriages.

Nope, not suggesting that at all. I'm saying Scientology as a reasonably new 'religion' could probably teach even the Vatican a few tricks :)

Must get around to shopping Cruise and Hubbard onto one of those pics.

Where is Paul Powers when you need him?

It will be interesting to see if this little thread in a corner of the interweb incurs the wrath of our friends.

I have the same opinion on Scientology as I do Religions of the world. At what point does a Cult get classed as a Religion anyways?

Most religions rely on faith.
Ask any follower of a major religion what it's all about, and they're usually happy to sit down and explain that being nice to people earns rewards when you're dead. They might even give you a copy of their religious text for free, and suggest you read it and make your mind up. They're usually a pretty open bunch about the message they follow. I'm speaking in very broad strokes here, of course.
Ask Scientology what it's all about, and first things first, you need to open your wallet to be assessed, and eventually you may or may not be told what their central message is, but you'll certainly be a lot poorer for it.
That, to me, is a very big difference.

Since we're talking about religion:

Cardinal Carlo Martini says Church '200 years behind'

They'd do well to heed him.
