There's a non-standard character which can happen when you copy and paste something. It has caught me out before. I tend to paste into notepad or similar which then shows up the random character.

Happens a lot from macs with the " key being sometimes different in applications some it's straight, some it's angled, same with - being - or like -- (the longer one)

You mean a dash (-)
As opposed to the n-dash (–) and the m-dash (—).

There is also the minus symbol, which is not a dash, even though it looks a bit like one.
