Post subject:  Heating?
When do you stick the heating on? I normally try and hold out until November and then turn it off at the end of February, but my sister reports she has hers on already.

So I wondered, what period do you typically have yours on?

I normally leave mine off as long as possible. Last year it stayed off completely because the place was so draughty. It would have been a waste of time and money.

This year I have moved to a block of flats where the heating is communal. So I have no control over it going on, but it has already been put on minimally. I am still using my summer duvet.

When it starts to get cold...

We turned ours on this week, because the overnight temperatures are around 0 and during the say is in single figures. Luckily I tried the heating 2 weeks ago and it didn't work, they replaced the pump (under guarantee) on Tuesday.

Ours only comes on when it's needed, all throughout the year.
Cheaper than letting the house get cold and running it up to temperature again.

Generally out mine on when it's cold enough for me to be bugged by it.
Gas fire's been on once or twice this month but it's not quite cold enough to resort to putting the radiators on yet.

Only if it's a concrete shell with some form of thermal mass. If it's thin walled with large windows the heat will go straight out.

heating still off here. however we need to procure thick curtains for the windows.

Ours went on a few weeks ago for a couple of reason:
A) The wife seems to be cold bloded. She always find the house too cold.
B) It needs to be warm enough for a new born baby.

My boyfriend is really hot blooded & has high blood pressure and gets too hot really easily. Since I've known him I've got used to being in a cooler house so we only put the heating on when it's really cold. Haven't put it on yet. If I'm pottering about doing things I'm usually warm enough anyway and if I get cold watching TV I'll put a blanket over me.

Was at Mum's last night and she has heating on nearly all the time as she's old. Was way too hot for me. Was quite nice to go home to a cooler house!

It was switched on a week ago. I’ve been sitting out the cold until the wife gets back from work, so the gas fire has not been running until then. Usually, I just embed myself in the same room as the MacPro - that seems to keep the small room I’m in nice and warm :)

As with most other people, the heating goes on only when it's needed, aside from being put on to dry the occasional item of clothing on the radiator, when it's needed in a hurry.

As I say to my kids "Don't sit there in t-shirt and shorts complaining that it's cold. Try putting some clothes on, you muppets!"

I tend to like my house cooler than many people, particularly all the women I've ever known, but I still turn it on the first time I feel cold. This year we had a fairly cold day a couple of weeks ago so I lit the boiler then.

It's only actually run for about 5 minutes since then. It's on a thermostat so it comes on in the morning if it's below 18C. It's now 19C without it having been on.

Luckily I'm not so hard up as I used to be and I can afford the average £30 a month it costs me. I also had my cavity wall insulation done a year or so ago, which does seem to have made a difference to how much heat I lose over night. When I first moved in, things were very tight and I was used to living in a very cold rented room so the stat was set to about 10C. Guests quite often commented that they could see their breath and kept their coats on!

Our last house had a thermostat, so it just came on whenever the temperature dropped. As we're on oil now and have no thermostat, it's just put on when we feel cold. Generally we just have it on in the morning and in the evenings we have the log burner on.
