They say that 3D cinema is waning, but the pure novelty of stereoscopic photography is still fun. I have a copy of Brian May's (that / the one out of Queen) book 'A Village Lost and Found', which has a stereo viewer and a lot of Victorian stereoscopic photographs. For Christmas, I was given a collection of cards that he's been working on - Diableries - which is a series of fantasy images of Hell made in 1860 and photographed in stereo (plus a modern card made in the same style - Queen in Hell - showing the eponymous band as skeletons). I believe. Boom with a lot more images is to follow later on in the year. This is, in my mind, magic stuff and oddly more compelling than the stereoscopic cinematograph projections of modern times. The set of cards have are photos of scenes built in plaster. The photos would then be printed in monochrome on tissue paper, and hand tinted using water colour. Because it was printed in tissue paper, you could hold it up to the light and they would glow. I also feel I should be having a go myself (I have some stereo cards I've made myself - but noting more than shots of Chelmsford). It's a fascinating subject. My recently deceased grandma has a stereo viewer and cards. I remember seeing them as a young child and being fascinated by them I think she got rid of it a long time ago. Bah. Tool's 10,000 days album package had a pair of stereoscopic glasses and some images to look at. It was very cool. |

I'll link you up later, basically if you know how high the photo was taken and distance between both cameras you can do some trig to find height of objects in the photo. |
