...but bear with me. I'm a complete technophobe when it comes to mobile phones. My current Nokia is about as basic as it comes, and to show how rubbish I am I've owned it over five years and only just learned how to save my address book to the SIM... ![]() ![]() Anyway, Batman has upgraded his phone, and his old one is up for grabs. I'm quite keen to acquire it, as my old one is beginning to get terribly battered, and the keys are wearing. Anyhoo... the nitty gritty. I'm on Orange PAYG. I have no idea how easy it will be to switch my phone, as I've only done it once and I did it in a phone store with help from the staff. Is it sufficient that I take the SIM out of the old phone and drop it in the new one and it all Just Works™? Thanks for any advice. |

assuming its not locked to Orange (if your sim is an orange sim then it doesnt matter). You will need to copy the contacts from the sim. Which IIRC is not too much of a hassle. ![]() |

It also depends how old your sim is - they change them every now and again, increasing the amount of contacts space etc. An old old sim may not work in a newish phone. Best go to an orange shop, they may be able to transfer your number onto a new PAYG sim. |

Well, it is an Orange SIM, and the new phone was an Orange contract phone. I know my contacts are on the card, but I don't know where the other information (my phone number and stuff) is kept. My phone is a Nokia 3310i. The "new" one is a Nokia N73. I guess the best thing is to try it and see what happens. ![]() |

Copy contacts to sim then swap the sim to the new phone. Unless the new phone is locked (of you've got a locked sim but I haven't seen one of those for years) it'll be fine. |

Thanks chaps. We're just waiting for the new phones to be activated and then I can have a play with it. My 3310 dates from about 2004. |

I can't afford an iPhone. It's just not on my radar. |

I had a 3330. Very similar to the 3310, just slightly different software and different colours. ![]() They're brilliant phones. I miss snake. ![]() |

This is why I keep all my phone numbers on my SIM rather than on the phone itself. All I have to do to switch phones is move the SIM card from one to the other. All you need from the new phone is for it to be A) network unlocked, or B) locked to the network you're on. |

Stick the SIM in Bat-man's old phone and give it a go. If all your addressbook contacts are copied to the SIM as you say then it'll either just work™ or it won't. It'll not wipe the SIM so the worst that'll happen is you have to put the SIM back in your existing handset. Mark |

you should back up your contacts to your sim before transferring it, then you can load them to the phone ![]() |
