Our rate of pay over here is pretty low, but then the corruption is hanging out of it and there's never any shortage of candidates... Some individual councillors are great but they're the exception, and collectively, well I'm sure you've seen the news reports :lol: :oops:

The fact that some councillors can collect as much as £20 000 in expenses makes a mockery of the system. Why not allow those who are unemployed to become councillors but rather than pay them treat it as work so that their benefits are not reduced. Since those on benefits are likely to use the services of councils might make sure that the services are adequate. No need to pay them.

The basic allowance isn't so bad, it's the amount they claim for sitting on committees (a lot of which meet infrequently at best) which are the real problem, at least round here. After joining a few committees a councillor could easily make a very comfortable living indeed.
