Did your dad read to you? I'm not sure either of my parents did, but I love reading anyway. My mum does too.

Read? Pah! When I were a lad, we got beaten and then cried ourselves to sleep (okay we probably deserved it and it was only occasionally). We read our own stories and it wad never before bed.

Yes he did I think, mostly my mum, but I grabbed the book off her at an early age and never looked back. Best thing about reading on your own is you don't have to contend with the annoying accents adults give characters.

Nope, my parents didn't read to me - that always seemed a bit over the top when I saw it on TV shows, just as unlikely as kneeling at the beside to say prayers, before going to sleep.

Funnily enough, I read a lot of books growing up, and still do now - so I personally don't buy the bit about it encouraging kids to read.

Do I read to my kids? Yes, both my wife and I take turns, but I believe the request was borne of my kids seeing it on TV rather than any kind of tradition.

Both of my parents read to me before bed when I was young, it was one of my major motivators for learning to read so that I could carry on with the stories by myself after they said goodnight, now my sister, bro-in-law and Dad read to my neffys and both of them have a reading age much higher than their own age, like I did.

Both my parents, and a grandparent, used to read to me when I was little. I used to love AA Milne stuff being read to me.

Now Best Beloved has eyesight issues, I find I read to him. I do the annoying accents thing.

My dad reads doing terrifying voices, it was great though.
Being read to does not seem to help my sister learn to read (she's 8). Might have to do with dyslexia and lack of school support more than anything though

No audio books? They are the modern alternative to lazy parents and loved ones.

Mum used to read to my brother and I. Dad doing stories was always a rare treat, he would never read but made up fantasy tails on the spot that included both my brother and I, along with a few of our favourite toys.

Both my parents read to me. I remember my dad reading me bedtime stories as much as my mum. My mum read to me more as she was at home looking after me, while my dad was at work. That said, my dad showed me how to use power tools when I was young.

My wife said when it seemed that were were going to be parents that we would both have to read to our child, and that we would have to be seen to be reading as well. This is so that reading isn't an odd, strange thing. Sadly, not been able to put that into practice.
